General Information

Founded in New York in 2008, the rabbit hole is a cultural and artistic initiative and collective - comprised of artists, storytellers, and visionaries – now numbering 3000+ in 56 countries. The rabbit hole was initially a member of ALF since 2020, and based in London. However in 2022, we have moved our base to Paris so that we could continue our relations Post Brexit in Europe, and with the Euro Med communities.

The collective seeks to stimulate new ideas about the self and the other and to challenge culturally constructed limits and borders.

Our focus since 2012 has been to deconstruct myths and stories that have painted the European Mediterranean countries over decades, bringing unity and shared memories into a new discourse of expression. We are focused on diasporas, imagined communities, and the subliminal narratives that connect us, with the Mediterranean anchoring us as our binding agent.

Through these projects, we have worked with over 100 artists and practitioners across the Euro Med, as well as presented our projects publicly to audiences of a few hundred more. We have created projects in Barcelona, Paris, Naples, Berlin, Gyoma, Bucharest and Istanbul.

Mission and Objectives

The rabbit hole seeks to stimulate new ideas about the self and the other and to challenge culturally constructed limits and borders. We create initiatives aimed at the deconstruction of discourses, myth, and storytelling in an effort to dissolve the boundaries between us. By exploring magical realism, often through elements of mysticism and more ancient beliefs that unite our humanity, we aim to reconstruct new narratives.

Our focus has been rooted in the mirroring of the other, through journeys of self-introspection.

By providing authentic and safe spaces for true understanding - through artistic immersive journeys that trigger self-inquiry and therefore deeper understanding of the mirror of “the other” - we aim to cultivate and to bring powerful and emotional ideas to life: Shared human experiences and resonance, that go beyond the societal definitions of ourselves and our histories. Creativity and culture therefore serving as the two key instruments for social cohesion and transformation.

Geographically speaking, the ethos of the rabbit hole is focused on bridging understanding in the Euro Med Region. After studying Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University in 2002, the rabbit hole founder’s mission is to create interactive and highly impactful channels to bridge dialogue and connect people as humans, through shared artistic immersive experiences, particularly in the Middle East.

Main Projects / Activities

Mobility Projects / Immersive International Residency Programs / Artistic Researches / Immersive Actions / Salons.

1) Mobility: Crystal Express: June 2012. 5 international artists were selected to embark on "the crystal express" - a 14 day train journey from Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Gyoma, Bucharest, Istanbul to Tel Aviv. They travelled and interacted with communities across Western and Eastern Europe and The Middle East. Their task was to explore connectivity across borders countries and cultures and to generate individual responses to the following question: What happens when we deconstruct all the paradigms, open all the borders and explore connectivity using our most powerful technology…..the senses?

2) Immersive Residency Programs: In 2021 “the rabbit hole” collective presented “the art of remembering” in its first global residency program in collaboration with Fondazione Morra Naples E-M Arts and the University of Naples.

In this project, the subject "the art of remembering" is entirely rooted in the connection with Naples as a strategic port on the Mediterranean and “what is it that connects us” beyond borders, languages and cultures. 11 acclaimed international artists and 3 Neapolitan artists were selected. The rabbit hole curated profound immersive workshops and experiences to trigger this process of remembering; introducing The Rabbit Hole Method™, a distillation of contemporary artistic practises, mysticism, mathematics and dance, including teachings of Borges, Jodorowsky, Lewis Carroll.

The program was developed by Samina Virani, Founding Director of the rabbit hole, Don Rodrigues, Professor English Literature, Vanderbilt University. The main advisors to the project :Professor John O. Voll is Professor Emeritus of Islamic History and past Associate Director of the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University; Raffaella Morra, Coordinator Fondazione Morra/E-M Arts, Piero Tomassoni Co-founder of the online art advisory Artvisor, Teresa Carnevale, President Fondazione Morra.

3) Artistic Research: “the art of remembering” artistic research based in Paris. From January 2025-June, 2025, several international artists travelled to Paris, France for the second edition of the residency program. Working from principles established in “the art of remembering” Naples residency developed with Fondazione Morra, the rabbit hole created and directed a 6 months international residency program, poetic journey and process-based collective experience for her collective “the rabbit hole.”

4) Salons: The Looking Glass Salons based in Paris. Beginning in 2025, The Looking Glass Salons series is dedicated to exploring the mystical in the human condition and what it is that connects us. It invites artists, practitioners, curators, philosophers from Paris and around the Euro Med to submit proposals on the theme. So far, the rabbit hole has hosted 6 salons in 2025.

5) Immersive Actions: "In the Dark We See" is an immersive, playful, and sensory experience designed to delve deeply into what it is that connects us, and to ignite human connection. Perspectives and histories dissolve in the eyes of the other, by sharing and experiencing the universal - our humanity.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

The rabbit hole moved its network to Paris in 2022. Post Brexit we felt opportunities in the UK were getting less and less, especially towards more global subject matters. We do feel that Paris is a current hotbed of artistic talent, creative minds and, related to ALF, thinkers and visionaries that resonate more closely with the Euro Med subject.

Involved in several diverse communities here, we aim to bring fresh perspectives from our different backgrounds and experiences to the artistic and culture landscape here; creating bridges between various bodies and networks that can often find themselves segregated: Art, theatre, politics, brands, academia.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Initially introduced to ALF by the late Executive Director, Dr. Nabil AlSharif, we appreciate the scope of the network and the opportunities it brings to collaborate on shared visions. It is unique and inspirational. Since the rabbit hole is a melting pot of people from the Euro Med and Middle East with passions and interests in this particular region, we are delighted to be a member of this network.
