General Information

Spoken Jerusalemite is a grassroots initiative that brings together over 3,000 women of diverse backgrounds from East and West Jerusalem. It seeks to create a shared language as the foundation for a shared future of communication, mutual understanding, and equal opportunity. Leveraging community resources, Spoken Jerusalemite also supports Palestinian women — 73% of whom are unemployed — in their pursuit of employment and independence. Spoken Jerusalemite has been operating uninterruptedly since 2017. Since the war began in October 2023, its community has remained active and is now more vital than ever.

Mission and Objectives

Bringing women from East and West Jerusalem together to learn each other’s language, in order to foster communication and mutual understanding and to empower Jerusalem’s Palestinian women on their way to employment and independence.

Main Projects / Activities

1. Language Exchange Community -
Spoken Jerusalemite is a grassroots community of over 3,000 Palestinian and Israeli women who come together to learn Arabic and Hebrew through mutual teaching and cultural exchange. Weekly meetings in Jerusalem are complemented by smaller sub-groups that offer varied and ongoing opportunities to connect — including joint religious study (Beit Midrash), bilingual sports groups, political dialogue circles, and more. Large community events throughout the year deepen language learning, trust, and shared experience.

2. The Employment Project -
The Employment Project supports Palestinian women from East Jerusalem in their journey toward professional and personal advancement. With unemployment affecting 73% of Palestinian women in the city, the project emerged from within the Spoken Jerusalemite community and leverages its shared resources — knowledge, connections, and solidarity — to accompany women through the job search process. Services, including resume editing, interview preparation, professional workshops, Hebrew courses, and guidance in academic and legal rights, are provided by dedicated volunteers. With around 1,200 participants, the project helps level the playing field for Palestinian women in Jerusalem while strengthening ties between the city’s Jewish and Palestinian communities.
