About Us

The Palestinian Environmental NGOs Network (PENGON- FoE Palestine) is a non profit, non-governmental organization whose role is to serve the Palestinian environment by acting as a coordinating body for the Palestinian environmental organizations located in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. PENGON was founded in 1996, due to the increased demands and responsibilities of Palestinian environmental organizations to defend the Palestinian environment.

PENGON members’ organizations whose mandates cover a wide and interconnected range of environmental issues such as land defense, agriculture, water, rural issues, sustainable development, cultural heritage, health and sanitation, biodiversity, human rights and community participation.

PENGON-FOE Palestine is the only environmental network for Palestinian environmental organizations in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Fundamental to PENGON’s work is to ensure that the Palestinian environment is dealt within the context of the Occupation and thereby calling on environmental efforts to work hand-in-hand with social justice causes while integrating social, economic and cultural rights as a part of environmental protection and defense.

PENGON gives special attention to international awareness, advocacy and mobilization, along with focusing on south-south cooperation, to support its efforts.

PENGON became a member in friend of the earth international (FOEI) in 2008.

Mission

The Palestinian Environmental NGOs Network (PENGON- FoE Palestine) is a coordinating framework of NGOs who are interested in the environment, PENGON seeks to maximize the efforts through raising awareness , capacity-building , the promotion of environmental issues and networking with local and international institutions to contribute in the achievement of sustainable development in the Palestinian society.

Protection of the environment and development of natural resources.

Environmental awareness and education.

Combating desertification in all its forms.

Fighting environmental pollution in all its forms.

Protection of biodiversity and wildlife.

Development of eco-tourism.

Development and promotion of the use of renewable and alternative energy sources.

Overview of PENGON's Activities and Projects
PENGON - Friends of the Earth Palestine is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 1996. It serves as a coordinating body for Palestinian environmental organizations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. PENGON's mission is to promote sustainable environmental protection and development through advocacy, capacity-building, and community engagement.

1. Renewable Energy Initiatives
PENGON has implemented solar energy projects to address energy scarcity in Gaza and the Jordan Valley. These initiatives have provided clean, community-managed electricity to over 900 households, with a focus on empowering women to take leadership roles in energy management and advocacy. ​

2. Environmental Awareness Campaigns
The "Palestine Says No to Plastic Bags" campaign aims to reduce plastic waste by promoting the use of reusable cotton bags. The initiative includes media outreach, distribution of eco-friendly bags produced by women in Shufat Camp, and lobbying efforts to implement taxes on plastic bags. ​

3. Environmental Justice and Advocacy
PENGON actively participates in international environmental justice movements, including organizing protests and delivering statements at global conferences. The organization emphasizes the intersection of environmental protection with social justice, advocating for the integration of environmental rights with broader human rights issues. ​

4. Community-Based Environmental Education
Through programs like "Drivers of Change," PENGON trains youth and community members in environmental advocacy and leadership. These initiatives aim to build local capacity for addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices. ​

5. Damage Assessment and Recovery Planning
In response to conflicts, PENGON conducts assessments of environmental damage, particularly to solar energy systems in Gaza. The organization develops recovery plans to restore and enhance resilience in affected communities. ​
