General Information

Al Badil - The Cultural Alternative is an association dedicated to the democratization of art and culture in Tunisia. Active since 2013 Al Badil is focused on promoting arts, culture, and creative expression in underserved regions of Tunisia. With a team of around 6 staff members, Al Badil collaborates with local and international partners to implement various artistic and educational projects. Our mission is to broaden the scope of cultural actions throughout the entire Tunisian territory, thereby offering citizens and artists new cultural and artistic alternatives. Al Badil also aims to support artists and future cultural operators in realizing their projects, while making a significant contribution to the Tunisian cultural and artistic scene. Al Badil's budget is sourced from grants and partnerships, and is used for creative workshops, cultural exchanges and making its own dance festival. We primarily work with funders, such as the French Institute of Tunisia since the creation of the association, for many years with foundations like the Drosos Foundation or development funds such as the French Development Agency or the EU's Tfanen Program. . Through these collaborations, Al Badil fosters sustainable cultural development and cross-cultural dialogue.

Mission and Objectives

Al badil's main objectives: 1. To broaden the scope of cultural actions throughout the entire Tunisian territory, thereby offering citizens and artists new cultural and artistic alternatives. 2. To support artists and future cultural operators in realizing their projects, while making a significant contribution to the Tunisian cultural and artistic scene. Several objectives arise from these missions: - Decentralization and democratization of culture - Dissemination of artists - Training in cultural management - Support for creation

Main Projects / Activities

We have several field projects that allow us to achieve our objectives: - Through the "À Petits Pas" project in Tunis and our rural projects in Kasserine, we reach a young audience (8-18 years old) through artistic education activities. We advocate for this to be a priority and work towards the implementation of extracurricular workshops and the integration of artistic cultural projects in various schools, colleges, and high schools. - Training in cultural management followed by concrete application through the implementation of residencies, festivals, and cultural actions via the "Hors Lits Tunisia" projects throughout the country or "Dhekira". - Cultural mediation activities with audiences that are geographically, culturally, and sociologically distant from art through the MC2CM project, targeting young performing artists from Tunisia and sub-Saharan Africa, or the "Ija Nahkiw" and "Ija Chouf" projects, which highlight artists or topics related to art and current events. - Support actions for cultural entrepreneurs within the framework of the EU Safir program, which has allowed us to provide specific follow-up to young people wishing to launch their cultural activities (theater, production studio, film festival, board games, etc.). We have provided our expertise on cultural products and involved numerous experts in the artistic field. - A capacity-building program for cultural professionals with the Massari project, through which we have implemented training in cultural management (from ideation to financial management) and support sessions for emerging choreographers with residencies led by Tunisian and international choreographers, and for performers with a French company, with mobility opportunities for the beneficiaries. Our projects have led to the employment of more than 40 young people in permanent or fixed-term contracts, the creation of several associations that now have a local impact and work with vulnerable youth, such as the "Art de Vie" association in Kasserine, "Cinérif" in Sidi Bouzid, "Piccolo Teatro di Bizerta", and "Wild Tunes". We regularly collaborate on various projects on the ground with these associations.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Al Badil could facilitate connections between local artists, cultural practitioners, and international networks. By organizing events, workshops, and collaborative projects, the association can serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and shared creative processes. Al Badil has experience working with young and emerging artists, providing them with opportunities for professional development. The organization can contribute to the Network by identifying and supporting talent, giving these artists access to larger international platforms. Al Badil’s work in promoting inclusive cultural practices and rural engagement demonstrates a commitment to spreading the reach of art. The association could contribute by raising awareness about marginalized areas or groups in Tunisia, helping the Network reach more diverse audiences. Al Badil has experience hosting performances, including collaborative events. The organization can contribute by hosting residencies or international cultural exchanges, providing spaces for artistic collaboration and learning. Thus, for the past five years, we have focused on training, access to cultural and artistic content, and the professionalization of young artists. Our long-term vision is to increase the number of our beneficiaries and offer them real training and workspaces. Now that we have mastered project management and training, we believe that our impact must be sustainable and long-term for these young people.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Joining the Anna Lindh Foundation could significantly strengthen Al Badil’s impact, expand its reach, and enhance its capacity to contribute to cultural and social dialogue in the region. Since the Ana Lindh Foundation connects a wide range of cultural and civil society organizations across the Euro-Mediterranean region, can open up collaboration opportunities, partnerships, and support from other organizations with similar goals. The membership can provide access to various funding opportunities, grants, and resources. This can be especially valuable for supporting projects, organizing events, or developing new initiatives. The foundation offers training, workshops, and resources that can help enhance the skills and capabilities of your team. This can be particularly useful for improving project management, cultural programming, and strategic planning. Being part of a prominent network like the Anna Lindh Foundation can increase Al Badil’s visibility and influence in the region. It can also enhance its advocacy efforts on issues related to cultural dialogue, intercultural exchange, and social inclusion. ALF often supports collaborative projects and initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue and understanding, and being a member can give us the chance to participate in or lead such projects.
