Alphabet Formation (ABF) is a Brussels-based non-profit organisation founded in 2016 and structured around a core team of four employees, supported by a wider network of trainers, facilitators and partner organisations. The organisation operates through multi-annual European collaborations and local initiatives, with budgetary resources that vary annually depending on ongoing programmes and co-financing arrangements. ABF implements a wide range of modalities of action, including EU-funded projects, non-formal education workshops, youth exchanges, training courses, seminars, community activities and international mobility opportunities. Its work promotes inclusion, intercultural dialogue, digital and transversal competences, community engagement and lifelong learning.
The organisation collaborates closely with NGOs, schools, VET providers, municipalities and civil-society organisations in Belgium and across Europe, maintaining long-term partnerships to deliver high-quality, participatory and socially impactful educational initiatives.
Mission and Objectives
Alphabet Formation aims to empower young people, adults and communities through inclusive, creative and accessible learning opportunities. Its mission is to strengthen active citizenship, digital and transversal competences, intercultural dialogue and social inclusion through non-formal and informal education. The organisation promotes the idea that learning, mobility and participation are key drivers for personal development and democratic engagement. ABF creates environments where individuals from diverse backgrounds can acquire new skills, build confidence, connect with others and take an active role in their communities. Its main objectives are to:
provide innovative, learner-centred educational experiences; foster intercultural exchange and mutual understanding; support digital empowerment and media literacy; promote social inclusion and equal opportunities; encourage civic participation and democratic engagement; strengthen cooperation between European organisations through mobility, capacity building and collaborative projects.
Main Projects / Activities
Alphabet Formation develops and implements a wide range of non-formal and informal learning activities aimed at young people, adults, educators and local communities. Its main activities include training courses, workshops, youth exchanges, community events, seminars and international mobility programmes that promote digital skills, intercultural dialogue, inclusion and active citizenship. The organisation regularly coordinates and participates in EU-funded educational and mobility projects, collaborating with partners across Europe and beyond to design innovative, learner-centred methodologies and tools. ABF also supports organisations and educators through capacity-building activities, peer learning, knowledge exchange and the co-creation of educational resources. Its work places strong emphasis on experiential learning, creativity, community engagement and cross-cultural cooperation. Activities are implemented both locally in Brussels and internationally with partner organisations, ensuring that participants benefit from diverse environments, intercultural encounters and meaningful learning experiences.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Alphabet Formation can contribute to the Belgian Anna Lindh Network by bringing expertise in non-formal education, digital empowerment, media literacy, civic participation and intercultural learning. ABF can support the network by sharing innovative methodologies, co-creating activities, and facilitating workshops or training sessions for youth workers, educators and civil-society organisations. The organisation can also contribute by strengthening cross-cultural dialogue through its experience in international mobility, community engagement and inclusive learning practices. ABF actively collaborates with diverse partners and can help connect network members with European opportunities, peer-learning formats and collaborative educational initiatives. At the national level, ABF can participate in working groups, joint actions and outreach activities, contributing to a more inclusive, creative and participatory civic space in Belgium. By engaging young people, adults and communities, ABF can support the network’s mission to promote dialogue, mutual understanding and active citizenship.
