General Information

STUDIO ALTA – Ceaselessly in Motion
A cultural centre, a collective, and a production unit. We let interesting ideas germinate and give space to societal needs. We are a safe place to dream in and create.

We have been active in culture since 2008. We started in the Prague district of Holešovice as a space primarily for production and presentation of dance art and physical theatre. Over time, our mission has transformed and we have evolved into a multicultural centre and creative hub connecting artists, the public, and diverse communities. In 2020, we moved from an industrial hall in Holešovice to Invalidovna in Karlín where we stayed for three years.

In 2023, we opened new Studio ALTA facilities in Libeň. An exceptional building of the former Libeň Brewery has become a new home for us, artists, visitors, and residents of Libeň.

What stands out in our programme are bold, innovative works that aim to inspire engagement, creativity, sharing, and constructive dialogue with otherness – the foundation of an open and healthy society.

Mission and Objectives

Studio ALTA is operated by ALT@RT, z.ú. Our mission is to support independent artistic creation and the development of civil society. We perceive culture and art as an instrument of social change, through which we develop critical thinking and deeper understanding of freedom and democracy in humans.

The aim of our activity is to find innovative artistic testimonies and to bring together top professional artists, new authors, the non-profit sector and the general public, including excluded social groups and at first sight heterogeneous communities, which nevertheless share a common value base.

We provide space for artistic research, without which no valuable work can be created. We give the necessary confidence to experiments, incomprehensible activities and even mistakes, without which we cannot find the right way. We flexibly respond to dynamic changes in society and realize our activities in a comprehensive network of our world and diverse society, from which we do not isolate ourselves in a bubble. We pay special attention to current environmental challenges and try to create a model example of a maximum environmentally friendly operation.

Through our activities and an extensive network of Prague, Czech and foreign partner organizations, we enter into an active dialogue both with the public and private sectors searching for innovative instruments of cultural policy. We have been constantly initiating a dialogue that leads to an understanding of our mutual needs, the importance of an independent culture and generally beneficial cooperation.
We are based on local needs and specifics, but we do our business in an international context. Since 2015, we have been a member of Trans Europe Halles, an international network of independent cultural and social centres, and through our numerous participation in world festivals and conferences we have been constantly confronted with international experience.

Main Projects / Activities

Studio ALTA is a well-established and one of the leading Czech independent institutions with over 15 years of history. Every year we host over 100 both local and international artists in more than 200 events. Studio ALTA is a place not only for presenting but also for learning. We are hosting dozens of residencies, masterclasses, networking sessions, and workshops, we are facilitating both long and short-term artistic research. ALTA creates a shelter and a laboratory for artists working mainly in the fields of performing arts but with a close relation to other forms and disciplines. This is why Studio ALTA is one of the key venues in the Czech independent arts infrastructure. It provides necessary contacts, space for creative work, and highlighted spots for presenting work. With its international aspect, it also allows the local community to meet artists from abroad and vice versa.

Since 2015, we have been a member of the international network of independent cultural and social centers Trans Europe Halles, and thanks to his numerous participation in world festivals and conferences, he constantly confronts his foreign experience. In 2017, we participated as a partner organization in the Living Realities project supported by the Creative Europe program. Maintaining the international direction, including international co-financing of activities, is one of the goals for the coming years. In 2018, we were a partner organization of the Dance roads project funded by the Creative Europe program. Since 2023 we have been part of the ON MOBILISATION project that focuses on community mobilisation through artistic processes. Since 2024 we are part of iCoDaCo project funded by Creative Europe dedicated to research, development and experimentation with alternative and innovative strategies and methodologies in the creation and dissemination of contemporary dance and also Roots & Shoots Erasmus+ international project that focuses on professional links towards youth employment in performing arts.
