General Information

Archipelago Network (A–N) is a research and documentation initiative dedicated to preserving the audiovisual heritage and material knowledge of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. Since its founding in 2019, A–N takes up the Cyclades as a living laboratory, where the richness of visual culture, traditional practices, and environmental resources intersect to address urgent social and ecological challenges. At a time when overtourism and climate change threaten the Cyclades’ unique cultural identity and biodiversity, A–N works to protect and promote the islands’ culture and traditional knowledge systems. With a comprehensive approach that includes field research, archival preservation, residencies, publications, online projects, and public programs, A–N creates an accessible digital repository and fosters regional memory, actively engaging with local and international partners. The initiative not only safeguards cultural heritage but also supports a sustainable, shared future for the Cyclades and its communities through research, outreach, and open access to its collections.

Mission and Objectives

Our mission is to research, document, and preserve the endangered cultural heritage, audiovisual history, and material knowledge of the Cyclades islands through community-driven and open-access practices to address urgent social, cultural and ecological challenges.

Our vision is to cultivate a sustainable future for the Cyclades islands, where the preservation of cultural and natural ecosystems, along with the empowerment of local communities and trans-local collaborations, addresses the challenges posed by today’s social and environmental pressures.

Main Projects / Activities

Field Research
→ We conduct in-depth field research across the Cyclades islands to document and understand the local cultural practices, environmental conditions, and community needs.

Archival Preservation
→ Our archival preservation efforts focus on digitizing and safeguarding endangered audiovisual heritage and material culture.

Interdisciplinary Residencies
→ Our project-based research residencies convene scholars, scientists, artists, and activists, allowing them to engage with collected archival materials and local knowledge.

Digital Repository
→ We maintain a comprehensive digital repository that houses audiovisual materials and metadata gathered through our archival activities and research programs.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We would like to build consensus and exchange best practices with other Network partners working in the cultural and environmental sphere, especially with regard to digital and communication tools. We have extensive expertise in the fields of arts-based research, digitization, and public humanities tools.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Since 2005, the ALF has acquired an impressive track record of building trust and consensus among civil society organizations from the Mediterranean region. We know of no other such organization with such a regional scope and success rate, and would like to leverage the opportunity afforded by membership to create further connections between our mission in the Aegean region of Greece and network partners working in heritage and cultural production in the Eastern Mediterranean.
