The Centre of Theatre for Children and Young People ASSITEJ Cyprus is the Cyprus National Centre of ASSITEJ International, the global network for the performing arts for children and young people. It brings together more than 200 members, including theatres, companies, artists, educators and cultural organisations across the country. The organisation operates through an elected Board and one part-time member of staff, supported by project-based collaborators and volunteers. Its annual budget derives from state funding, European cooperation programmes and project-based income.
Its modalities of action include the organisation of the international festival Mitsikouri, artistic productions, professional exchanges, seminars, conferences and community-based workshops promoting children’s right to participate in cultural life. ASSITEJ Cyprus actively engages in European and international partnerships.
Main partners include the Cyprus Ministry of Culture, municipalities, universities, cultural institutions, international festivals and organisations working in performing arts, youth engagement and intercultural dialogue.
Mission and Objectives
The mission of the Centre of Theatre for Children and Young People ASSITEJ Cyprus is to promote the right of every child and young person to access and participate in high-quality artistic and cultural experiences, as an essential part of their social and human development. As the Cyprus National Centre of ASSITEJ International, the organisation works to strengthen the field of performing arts for young audiences at local, regional and international level.
Its objectives are to support artistic creation, encourage intercultural dialogue and social inclusion through the arts, empower children and young people as active cultural citizens, and enhance professional development and networking among cultural practitioners. Through festivals, productions, educational and community-based programmes, international collaborations and European projects, the organisation promotes cooperation across cultures and disciplines.
Main Projects / Activities
The Centre of Theatre for Children and Young People ASSITEJ Cyprus develops a wide range of artistic, educational and networking activities at national and international level. Its flagship action is Mitsikouri – International Performing Arts Festival for Children and Young People, the first festival of its kind in Cyprus, which presents productions from different cultural contexts and creates spaces for intercultural dialogue, professional exchange and community participation.
The organisation is an active partner in European cooperation projects, focusing on artistic creation for early years, research, mobility of artists and capacity building for the cultural sector. It regularly organises seminars, workshops, conferences and round tables for professionals, as well as participatory artistic actions for children, families and communities, including in non-urban and socially vulnerable areas.
ASSITEJ Cyprus supports the development and international visibility of Cypriot artists, facilitates collaborations with European and international partners, and implements initiatives that promote inclusion, access to culture and the active cultural participation of young people.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
ASSITEJ Cyprus can contribute to the ALF Network in Cyprus by activating its wide national membership and its strong connections in Cyprus and internationally. Through its more than 200 members and its collaborations with municipalities, universities, schools and cultural organisations, it can facilitate the outreach of ALF initiatives to children, young people, artists and local communities across the country, including non-urban and under-represented areas.
The organisation can host intercultural artistic activities, workshops, conferences and networking meetings, creating spaces for dialogue between different cultures and generations. Through the international festival Mitsikouri and other actions, it can offer a platform for Euro-Mediterranean artistic exchange and visibility for ALF initiatives.
In addition, ASSITEJ Cyprus can support capacity building, mobility opportunities and the development of new collaborations between Cypriot organisations and partners from the Euro-Mediterranean region.
