With over twenty years of experience across Brazil, the U.S., and Europe, Simone Cavalcante advocates for social justice, sustainability, and LGBTQ+ rights. Growing up in a working-class Brazilian neighborhood, she witnessed environmental inequities firsthand, a reality that shaped her career in public policy and human rights. Her academic work on queer masculinities complements grassroots activism with Clube Safo and Casa Resistências-Maré. She has also supported refugee integration and has tutored youth in detention.
Mission and Objectives
To promote social justice, human rights and LGBTQ+ equality through advocacy, education and community engagement. Simone aims to contribute to more inclusive and equitable societies by connecting grassroots activism, research and public policy, with particular attention to gender and LGBTQ+ rights, intercultural dialogue and the inclusion of marginalised communities.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
I can bring expertise from my volunteer work with Casa Resistências-Maré in Rio de Janeiro (supporting lesbians of color from underserved communities) and my board membership at Clube Safo in Lisbon (an LGBTQI+ nonprofit). Additionally, my interdisciplinary training in Queer Studies and a M.S. in Nonprofit Leadership allows me to share methodological tools for analyzing movement-building, governance, and institutional sustainability, helping bridge academic research with practical activism.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
ALF Network’s focus aligns with my intellectual and activist commitment to documenting social movements against authoritarianism. I seek to learn from and contribute to conversations about how community organizers (especially those led by and for queer folks) forge counter-hegemonic discourses. Joining would allow me to refine the historical and transnational framing of my research, deepen my understanding of movements that remain understudied—particularly those that resist both oppressive politics and right-wing movements across Europe and the Americas.
