Atrium is an artistic research production based in Skopje, founded in December 2021. With a focus on socially engaged projects, the collective has gained experience through collaborations within the local and regional art scenes, developing participatory formats, and using performing and audiovisual arts as tools for critical emancipation and cultural transformation.
Mission and Objectives
Atrium’s mission is to create and support socially engaged artistic practices that nurture togetherness and collective action, while affirming and valuing diversity as the foundation for meaningful connection.
Our Program objectives include:
• Producing interdisciplinary, theatre and audiovisual projects
• Researching socially engaging themes, on a decentralized level
• Establishing youth artistic educational programs and challenging public engagement
• Exploring models of critical emancipation of audiences
• Research and advocacy efforts on changing realities for marginalized spaces and communities

Selected Projects - Atrium
“Senses 1.0” - Interdisciplinary project (May 2022)
The first project in the Senses series, where each artist presented one human sense through their artistic practice. The project was based on collective research of bodily stimuli, perception, and post-pandemic sensitivity.

“Waiting Room” - Documentary theatre performance (August 2022 – March 2023)
Atrium produced a documentary theatre performance inspired by the German text Waiting Room by Klaus Pohl. The project explored Macedonia’s prolonged social transition and its impact on citizens. Personal testimonies collected from participants formed the basis for the dramatization, addressing experiences related to the 1990s, privatization processes, the TAT affair, and the A1 case.

The second event in the Senses series, conceived as a hybrid between exhibition, performance, and experimental audience interaction space.

“Belonging” - Theatre performance (July 2023 – February 2024)
A theatre work addressing care as a concept, developed through an interdisciplinary research-based process involving all participants equally. The project explores questions of belonging, solidarity, and collective responsibility.

2024
“RE-IMAGINE / Water Reflections: Vardar Edition” - Residency project (2024–2025)
Atrium participated in a one-year international residency programme led by a consortium of organisations from Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Hungary, focused on green and sustainable artistic practices. The project explored sustainable production methods and developed an interdisciplinary artistic work raising awareness about the ecological endangerment of the Vardar River through visual installations and dance performance.

“Hunger” – Theatre performance (December 2024 – September 2025)
Atrium produced its fourth performance in collaboration with director Hana Milenkovska, dramaturg Kalija Kiselicki, and composer Adi Imeri. The play addresses hunger and insatiability on emotional and physical levels, portraying it as a perpetual individual and collective struggle.

Workshops with “Young Theatre Experts” - Belgrade (2025)
In January–February 2025, Dino Chupevski led a series of workshops with the youth group Young Theatre Experts at the National Theatre and KC Magacin in Belgrade. The workshops focused on feminist history, relations between institutional and independent theatre, and exploring personal and collective experience through theatre methods.

“Dushan” - Theatre play (August 2025)
A nonlinear performance portraying fragments from the life of a young poet who voluntarily enlists in war. Through deconstruction of relationships, the work reflects on the destructive impact of war while questioning how artists can process trauma without exploiting tragedy.

“Reflections” – Multimedia exhibition (December 2025 – January 2026)
Atrium curated and produced a multimedia retrospective exhibition dedicated to the lives and work of painter Dimche Protuger and activist and writer Ratka Protuger, highlighting her role within the antifascist, women’s, and partisan movements during World War II.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
As a civil society organisation active in contemporary art and culture, Atrium can contribute to the national ALF Network in North Macedonia by promoting intercultural dialogue through artistic and cultural practices that connect diverse communities, especially across different cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds.
We can contribute to the Network locally by: share and build community on the produced inclusive cultural programming ( in context to various exhibitions, public discussions, workshops and participatory art projects that bring together artists, cultural practitioners and audiences from different communities.); contributed and participate in the joint initiatives that build bridges between civil society actors across the Euro-Mediterranean region; reflect and contextualise our participatory theatre and interdisciplinary methodologies for group dynamics; participate in ALF programmes, open calls and events, and encourage other Macedonian Network members to do the same, thereby strengthening the presence and impact of the national Network within the wider ALF ecosystem.

We want to join the ALF Network to strengthen Atrium’s work in nurturing intercultural dialogue through contemporary art and cultural practices in North Macedonia and the wider region.
