Environment/Sustainable development, Innovation and EntrepreneurshipGeneral Information
Challenge to Invention developed multiple inventions for the energy transition. But little is done to protect the approximately 10,000 inventors in the Netherlands which is largely due to unfamiliarity of policy makers with the specific nature of inventions. Which result implementation these and other inventions. Challenge to Invention published in 2022 “Radicale innovatie (Radical innovation),” 381 pp (ISBN:978 90 903 5046 2) describing the characteristics of inventions and obstacles to protection. And a solution for better protection which increase the innovation power. For a better enviroment and increasing prosperity.
Mission and Objectives
Creating inventions for more effective ways to reach the climate and energy transition goals.
Increasing the knowledge about inventing and awareness about the necessity for better protection of the intellectual property of inventors.
Europe is losing at the innovation level to China and US. The solution is not (only) more funding for innovation, but above all understanding that innovation needs the protection of the of intellectual property of inventors. With limited funding huge steps can be made to solve the energy transition, and make Europe the innovation space of the world.
There are multiple inventions that help to reach public goals. Some specific kind of inventions (see page 35, “Product georienteerde uitvinding” in Radicale Innovatie) should not be monopolised by one specific company, but be shared with the entire community. Examples are: limiting energy use, reduction of greenhouse gas, reduction of nitrogen, or reducing salinity. If policy makers finance succesful inventions with substantial public value, then:
Monopolizing inventions with resulting huge profits on (stolen) work are not possible anymore.
Once inventions become public intellectual property, no money and time is lost anymore on legal steps for protection that often do not function well. Transaction cost will be highly reduced.
When an invention is made public intellectual property, economic prosperity can be increased.
Main Projects / Activities
Increasing the knowledge about inventing and awareness about the
necessity for better protection of the intellectual property of inventors.
Embrace the inventors. They are the technical problem solvers society needs. We advocate a dialogue between inventors and society. What society needs and how inventors can be of help. And what inventors need, and how society can remove the exiting barriers.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Sharing info how innovation and inventions might help to solving all kind of problems we face in society.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
I hope the goals for a better environment, especially in the energy transition can be better reached.
