General Information

For nearly 30 years, Clowns Without Borders Sweden has worked in some of the world’s most challenging environments, including war-torn communities, refugee camps, evacuation centres, hospitals, and juvenile detention centres.

Through performances and workshops, we create spaces for play and creativity, where children can express themselves freely and regain a sense of hope even in the most difficult circumstances.

The organisation is built on the voluntary engagement of professional artists such as clowns, circus performers, acrobats, musicians, and actors. These artists donate their time and expertise to strengthen children's psychosocial well-being and sense of hope through humor and play.

Mission and Objectives

Vision: A world filled with play, laughter, and dreams, where every person can develop, express themselves freely, and feel hope—even in difficult situations.

Mission: Clowns Without Borders Sweden uses clowning, circus, and creative activities for and with children in vulnerable situations to spread hope, joy, and laughter. Through art and play, we create meaningful encounters where children can process difficult experiences and regain a sense of optimism for the future.

Core Values: Clowns Without Borders Sweden applies a child rights perspective, ensuring that children's well-being is always at the center of their efforts. Their work is based on the power of play, human rights, and a strong belief that culture and art are essential for children’s well-being and development.

Main Projects / Activities

  1. Direct support for the target group
Through our artistic and pedagogical activities, we bring play, laughter, and creativity to children in vulnerable situations. One example of this is emergency response missions, where we send artistic teams to perform and bring joy to communities affected by natural disasters or war.
  2. Collaboration with the humanitarian development sector
We work with adults by providing training in our Laughter and Play method, ensuring that our creative approaches continue to benefit communities even after we leave. This often takes place alongside a tour in a country where we simultaneously conduct workshops for our partners.
  3. Strengthening the artistic and cultural sector
Through partnerships, we focus on knowledge exchange and capacity building for local artists. A key example is our clown camps, organized in collaboration with regional partners, where artists from different countries come together to learn, share, and grow.
  4. Raising awareness among the general public
We advocate for children's rights and highlight how laughter and art can be powerful tools for change. This includes awareness campaigns, such as those promoting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, with a special focus on Article 31, which emphasizes every child’s right to rest, play, and participate in cultural life.
