General Information

Deraya University was established in 2010 by the Egyptian Presidential Decree No. 91/2010 as the second private university in southern Egypt. Today, the university offers 5 undergraduate and 5 graduate programs. We have four operating schools: Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, and Business Administration, as well as an Executive Education arm named Deraya Academy for Continuing Education. Additionally, we have a Deraya Center for Scientific Research, a Deraya Center for Research and Sustainability, and a Teaching and Learning Center. As an emerging higher education institution in the Middle East, Deraya University is committed to upholding John Dewey's philosophy that "education is not a preparation for life; Education is life itself." We aspire to unleash the potential of our students and graduates by exploring various areas of knowledge.

Mission and Objectives

Our mission is to provide an avenue of high-quality modern higher education to young people, emphasizing active intellectual engagement, participation, and discovery, all within an innovative academic environment conducive to such learning.

Main Projects / Activities

Aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030, Deraya University integrates sustainability into all aspects of its operations. We are committed to supporting and promoting the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), conducting research to address sustainable development challenges, and providing educational opportunities that equip students with the knowledge and skills to promote sustainable development. Our campuses and major programs are designed to be environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive, ensuring long-term positive impacts on society.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Deraya University can uniquely contribute to the ALF Civil Society Network through its extensive experience and commitment to fostering intellectual growth and sustainable peace. As the educational hub for international cooperation, Deraya is well-positioned to facilitate partnerships and exchange programs that promote mutual understanding and collaboration among diverse cultures within the network.

Through the International Cooperation Council and the Centre for Research and Sustainability (CRS), the university leads initiatives that align closely with the network’s goals in sustainable development, sharing best practices and innovative solutions to common societal and environmental challenges. As a higher education institution, Deraya University integrates the values of the network into its curricula and co-curricular activities, encouraging students to engage with civil society initiatives and helping to cultivate a new generation of socially responsible, globally minded leaders.

In addition, the Boutros Boutros-Ghali Chair for Sustainable Peace provides a dedicated platform for seminars, workshops, and conferences addressing critical issues related to peacebuilding, dialogue, and sustainability in the Euro-Mediterranean region. These activities offer opportunities for knowledge exchange, joint projects, and multi-stakeholder dialogue that can enrich the work of the ALF Network.

Deraya University also brings a strong culture of academic excellence, personal development, and talent cultivation, reinforced by its participation in international cultural and academic exchange programmes. By mobilizing its institutional resources, expertise, and networks, Deraya University can actively advocate for ALF initiatives, support the identification and promotion of promising projects, and help transform shared aspirations into concrete, measurable achievements for the benefit of the wider network.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We wish to continue as a member of the ALF Network because we see it as a key, future-oriented platform for advancing its mission of fostering intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding, and inclusive, sustainable societies across the Euro-Mediterranean region. In the coming years, we aim to contribute more actively to innovative educational and youth initiatives, joint research and practice on peace, sustainability, and social cohesion, and the co-creation of long-term partnerships between civil society, academia, and local communities. By combining our institutional strengths in teaching, research, and outreach with the ALF’s diverse network, we hope to help transform the values of dialogue, respect, and shared responsibility into concrete, scalable initiatives that support the Sustainable Development Goals and equip future generations to address emerging regional challenges with empathy, creativity, and a strong commitment to peaceful coexistence.
