General Information

The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) with 394 hostels is the largest provider of youth accommodation in Germany. There are about 8,8 million overnights in DJH hostels every year. DJH as a non-for-profit association has about 2.4 million members supporting the idea of bringing young people together and to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. DJH offers programs in its hostels, including international exchanges and encounters. Partner associations from all over the world are organized in Hostelling International (HI): https://hihostels.com/

Mission and Objectives

Our vision

Youth hostels in Germany. A good decision for a better world, every day.

Our mission

We provide a home for a more liveable future for people, the climate and the environment. To this end, we create safe spaces where people from all over the world can come together and communicate. We promote a lifelong sense of wonder, understanding and appreciation. We empower young people to find their own path and engage with the world. Today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow. Drawing on our experience of over 100 years, we will continue to operate, act and lead sustainably in the future. With us, everyone can experience fair, respectful, participatory coexistence in a sustainable way.

Main Projects / Activities

DJH offers various programs in about 400 hostels in Germany, for school and university trips, for families, also like young travelers who want to discover the world and meet other people and their perspectives. International programs, for example, are international encounters, volunteering and internship programs. Picking two examples: 1.the IOU Respect Program, in cooperation with Youth Hostel Associations from France, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and the USA: https://youtu.be/IcYtF6z0-b0 , funded by Federal Child and Youth Plan and 2. the seven-country-encounter “Future of Europe” funded by Erasmus+|Youth.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We want to join actively the events of the network, be partner in ALF working groups concerning the youth, we can promote the ideas and news of the ALF in our media. We want to announce our programs within the network, offer ourselves as partner for new projects together with other partners/members of ALF.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We want to deepen our international cooperation with other organizations which aim on respect between people and cultures. We already have many bilateral partners in the Mediterranean area, but we want to be part of a strong multi-lateral network. The ideas of the ALF fit perfectly to the statutory goals of DJH.
