General Information

Digidem Lab is an independent democracy lab that supports neighbourhoods, municipalities and public institutions in conducting effective and inclusive citizen dialogues. We are a worker-owned cooperative that designs and develops methods for political and democratic innovation.

We study, test and offer internationally proven digital tools and methods for civic participation and create citizen-centred processes to reach underrepresented groups.

We are at the moment, Spring 2025, seven part-time employees.

Mission and Objectives

Participation - We believe in developing democracy to include more aspects of society and developing methods to create greater participation.
We believe in co-creation in all aspects of our work, including the development of processes and digital tools for participation.
Mandate - We want people who are affected by decisions to have a say in making them. We work to ensure that our projects have a clearly defined mandate for participants.
Transparency - We promote greater transparency in participatory processes. We share our knowledge and experience. Our digital tools are open source to ensure security and auditability.
Cooperation - We build on the successful experiences and work of others and strive to share our knowledge, code, and expertise with others.
Continuous learning - We are constantly developing our methods and tools for participation to adapt them to a changing reality.

Main Projects / Activities

Past projects include participatory budgeting for cities around Sweden as well as New York and Chicago, the research project Collective Intelligence through Digital Tools (COLDIGIT), and Sweden's two national citizen's assemblies, the Swedish Citizens' Assembly on Climate (Fairtrans) where we designed the sessions, facilitation, and logistics as well as The Swedish Food Agency national assembly on food, climate and health.

Current projects include the City of Gothenburg Citizens' Assembly on city planning, Decidim Digital Open-Source Tool (assisting multiple municipalities with installing the tool), city of Lund city district labs on climate, and courses in community organizing and participatory process design for municipalities and civil society.
