General Information about the Ecological Diving Club MALO MORE
The Ecological Diving Club MALO MORE is a non-profit civil society organization based in Komarna, Croatia, dedicated to the protection of the marine environment, biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and environmental education. The Club brings together certified divers, environmental experts and volunteers who actively participate in underwater clean-up campaigns, marine litter monitoring, biodiversity research, and citizen science initiatives in the Neretva River estuary, the Mali Ston Bay and the southern Adriatic Sea.
The Club currently employs one full-time staff member responsible for coordinating projects, developing partnerships, cooperating with public institutions, and organizing environmental protection activities. Through its professional and organizational capacities, MALO MORE has become a recognized partner in the implementation of public policies related to nature conservation and sustainable marine management.
A particularly significant role of the Club is its participation as a cooperating organization in the implementation of the Management Plan for the Protected Area and Natura 2000 Ecological Network Site (6146) – Mali Ston Bay, where it contributes to activities focused on marine litter removal, marine ecosystem monitoring, and biodiversity conservation.
MALO MORE cooperates with universities, scientific and research institutions, public authorities and local communities to promote the sustainable management of marine ecosystems and to raise public awareness of environmental challenges, particularly marine litter, plastic pollution, microplastics and the impacts of climate change. The Club regularly organizes educational workshops, environmental awareness campaigns and volunteer programmes that actively engage young people, local communities and other stakeholders. Through national and international partnerships, MALO MORE develops innovative projects that combine scientific research, environmental protection, active citizen participation and international cooperation with the aim of preserving the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas while promoting intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and sustainable development.
Mission and Objectives
Mission: The mission of the Ecological Diving Club MALO MORE is to protect and preserve the marine environment and biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea through scientific research, environmental education, volunteer engagement, and active cooperation with public institutions, research organizations and local communities. The Club is committed to promoting sustainable development, responsible use of marine resources, environmental awareness and active citizen participation while contributing to the conservation of the Mediterranean's natural and cultural heritage.
Objectives: The main objectives of the Club are: To protect marine ecosystems, biodiversity and coastal habitats through practical conservation activities and scientific research. To monitor marine litter, plastic pollution and microplastics and contribute to evidence-based environmental management. To promote environmental education, citizen science and volunteerism, with a particular focus on young people.
To strengthen cooperation between civil society organizations, scientific institutions, public authorities and local communities. To support sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and the development of the blue economy.
To contribute to climate change adaptation and the protection of coastal and marine ecosystems.
To promote intercultural dialogue, international cooperation and the exchange of knowledge within the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions. To develop and implement national and international projects that contribute to environmental protection, sustainable development and social inclusion.
Main Projects / Activities
The Ecological Diving Club MALO MORE implements projects focused on marine conservation, biodiversity protection, marine litter monitoring, environmental education and sustainable coastal development. Over the past several years, the Club has successfully implemented the projects "Upoznajmo i očuvajmo vode Malog mora i rijeke Neretve I–III", co-financed by the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, as well as "Čisto podmorje, potreba mjesta i Novog mosta Komarna" and "Ne otpadu u podmorju Malog mora i slivu rijeke Neretve", supported by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund (FZOEU). The Club also participated in the project "Aktivno i poduzetno zaštitimo okoliš od plastike", financed by the Ministry of Science and Education, and in several cross-border biodiversity initiatives, including "Improved Protection and Sustainable Management of River Ecosystems in the Neretva Delta, Trebižat and Mostarsko Blato" (CEPF) and the TETHYS4ADRION project addressing plastic pollution in rivers and the Adriatic Sea. Through these initiatives, MALO MORE organizes underwater and coastal clean-up campaigns, biodiversity monitoring, citizen science activities, educational workshops, and international cooperation aimed at protecting the Adriatic and Mediterranean marine environment.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
The Ecological Diving Club MALO MORE can contribute to the Croatian Anna Lindh Network by sharing its experience in marine conservation, environmental education, citizen science and community engagement. We can actively participate in joint national and international initiatives, organize educational workshops, volunteer programmes and environmental awareness campaigns, particularly for young people and local communities.
Our organization has extensive experience in developing partnerships between civil society organizations, public institutions, research organizations and local authorities, including cross-border cooperation with partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are ready to contribute to knowledge exchange, capacity building and the development of innovative projects that promote environmental sustainability, intercultural dialogue and active citizenship. Through our activities in the Adriatic and Mediterranean region, we can also support the Network by connecting environmental protection with cultural heritage, sustainable tourism and community development, while promoting cooperation among organizations working towards shared Mediterranean values.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
We would like to join the Anna Lindh Foundation Network because we share its core values of dialogue, cooperation, mutual understanding and sustainable development across the Mediterranean region. As an environmental organization working in one of the most valuable coastal and wetland ecosystems of the Adriatic Sea, we believe that environmental protection can serve as a powerful platform for intercultural dialogue, community engagement and international cooperation.
Joining the Network would enable us to exchange knowledge and good practices, establish new partnerships with organizations across the Euro-Mediterranean region, and develop innovative projects that connect environmental conservation, education, cultural heritage and active citizenship. We are particularly interested in involving young people, promoting volunteerism and citizen participation, and strengthening cooperation between civil society, research institutions and local communities. We also wish to contribute our experience in marine conservation, biodiversity protection and cross-border cooperation while learning from the expertise of other Network members. We believe that becoming part of the Anna Lindh Foundation Network will strengthen our capacity to deliver meaningful initiatives that promote dialogue, inclusion and sustainable development throughout the Mediterranean.
