FLAG Škoji is a non-profit Fisheries Local Action Group operating under the Community-Led Local Development (CLLD) approach within the framework of EU fisheries policy and related funds.
It brings together public, economic and civil society stakeholders to plan and implement local development initiatives in fisheries areas of islands Hvar, Vis and Šolta The FLAG implements its local development strategy using support from European funds, in particular the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (or its successor fund), under national operational programmes.
Its role includes decentralised allocation of funds to local projects that contribute to the implementation of the Local Development Strategy, in line with EU and national priorities for fisheries areas.
Mission and Objectives
The core mission of FLAG Škoji is to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the public, private and civil sectors to foster sustainable rural and maritime development on the islands.
Through its activities, the FLAG aims to improve the quality of life in local communities, support the fisheries sector, and promote diversified island economies.
Main Projects / Activities
FLAG Škoji implements and supports a range of activities such as cooperation with artists, educational campaigns for children and youth, networking and knowledge exchange, and promotion of island products.
Examples include the campaign “Naši su ŠKOJI – tvoji i moji” focused on youth as drivers of regeneration and sustainable island futures, and projects like “Dobri dupini Škoja” that link civil society, marine environment protection and local communities.
In the 2021–2027 programming period, FLAG Škoji manages several priority measures, including support for investments that increase the visibility and availability of local fishery products and gastronomy based on fishery products,
Through the “Our responsibility” campaign, FLAG Škoji developed and distributed around portable recyclable beach ashtrays made from recycled, non-combustible plastic to reduce cigarette butt pollution on beaches and in the sea.
FLAG Škoji supports projects that safeguard and interpret local fishing traditions, maritime culture and associated knowledge, recognising them as a core part of island identity and attractiveness.
Through cooperation with museums, local authorities and civil society (for example, the new permanent Fisheries Collection in Vrboska and heritage‐oriented projects), the FLAG helps document, present and valorise fishing and maritime heritage for residents and visitors.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
FLAG Škoji can contribute to the growth of the national network through its solid operational experience in community-led local development, project implementation and multi-stakeholder coordination in island fisheries areas. By sharing practical knowledge on strategy delivery, stakeholder engagement, heritage-based initiatives and environmental actions, FLAG Škoji can support peer learning, strengthen cooperation among members and help expand the visibility and impact of the network at national level.
