The Narodni Chitalishta Foundation supports and strengthens Bulgaria’s unique network of chitalishta—community cultural centres that serve as vital hubs for culture, education, and civic engagement. Established to preserve tradition while fostering innovation, the Foundation works to ensure that chitalishta remain relevant and sustainable in the 21st century. It provides capacity-building, advocacy, and project support to cultural operators and local communities, with a focus on enhancing participation, lifelong learning, and social inclusion.

The Foundation has collaborated with more than 400 chitalishta and maintains strong ties with local authorities, civil society organisations, and national institutions. Its initiatives include policy advocacy, research, training, and partnerships that strengthen cultural infrastructure and human capital. By bridging cultural heritage with contemporary community needs, Narodni Chitalishta Foundation helps create resilient cultural ecosystems and contributes to Bulgaria’s broader social and cultural development within the European context.
