With a dedicated team of 15 professionals, Fundación Plan B Educación Social carries out a wide range of socio-educational projects locally in Salamanca, Spain and its surrounding areas, as well as on the international level. Through its projects and programmes, Plan B fosters active participation of children, teenagers, youth and adults alike, the development of social skills, and the empowerment of communities.
The foundation is divided into different areas: environment, employment and training, research, and community action. Within community action, there are two branches: connect with your neighbourhood, which focuses on local actions in Salamanca, and international, which focuses on European and international actions.
Plan B’s main areas of action are socio-educational intervention, child and youth participation, international cooperation projects, employment and training, and nature learning and environment.
Mission and Objectives
Plan B’s mission is to fight for social education as each citizen’s right and to favour quality educational, formative and social intervention actions through our professional work.
We strive to create social change to improve community life, especially the lives of children and youth, by giving them a chance for personal, social and educational growth. We achieve this by setting clear goals that we use as a guide to mark the path of the foundation’s work:
-Develop a transformative participation
-Research, intervene, and integrally promote education as a tool for change.
-Empower the community as a whole, promote high quality democracy, and develop fields that affect us all, such as the environment or social economy.
Main Projects / Activities
Plan B’s expertise involves designing innovative projects that are implemented on the local, national, and international levels. All of the projects focus in some capacity on active participation and civic engagement, and they span a wide variety of topics relevant in today’s society, such as skills development, mental health awareness, gender equality, diversity and inclusion, digitalisation, climate action, and many more.
Our project’s serve a wide range of target groups that include children and youth, as well as adults and the elderly. We also try to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged groups, people living in rural areas, and other vulnerable groups, such as the Roma population and youth at risk of social exclusion in our community. The initiatives carried out by the foundation not only focus on providing activities for each group on its own, but also on connecting different groups with each other to enhance social correlations and participation flow between them, like children and the elderly for example. We believe that this is the way to strengthen bonds between community members and thus create a more united society with different perspectives and points of view.
Our main activities on the local level are led by our social educators, professionals who are trained specifically to intervene in the local community to improve socio-cultural relations and help people with social difficulties or people at risk of social exclusion. We work in local youth centres with children, adolescents and youth (18-30 years-old) and provide them with a safe space where they can enhance their non-formal education and sociocultural skills. We also organise social participation groups with children of different ages, as well as adults, in underprivileged neighbourhoods in the city of Salamanca, empowering them to voice their opinions and propose improvements for their community. In terms of education and training, we offer non-formal education courses through the Ferrer i Guàrdia school, a VET centre which offers courses and training for recreation leaders. In the spring, our “Aulas Activas”, or “nature classrooms” programme takes place. It is a nature-learning programme for local middle and high-schoolers that immerses them in nature for 3-4 days, teaching them about natural resources and environmental conservation.
On the national level, our focus is on offering non-formal learning opportunities based on the needs of the community. Therefore, we highlight offering job placement and employability workshops, democratic dialogue opportunities linked with policy response or multidimensional support in the educational field. We also work on capacity-building activities, both with youth workers in our community as well as with youth themselves, turning them into agents of change in their peer groups and greater community. We aim to provide them with the tools and skills to become self-sufficient leaders who continue growing and learning, sharing their knowledge with others and thus positively impacting society.
On the international level, Plan B has experience as both coordinator and partner in projects within the Erasmus+ (KA1, KA2), ESC (European Solidarity Corps) , and CERV (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values) programmes. In addition to cooperation partnerships, we have many years of experience managing youth exchanges both at the local and international level. We are also an ESC sending and hosting organisation, hosting 9 international volunteers each year in Salamanca and supporting them throughout their volunteering experience in our community. We have formed lasting partnerships with several organisations across the European continent and we are expanding our scope as we begin to collaborate with organisations from outside of Europe as well.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Our organisation specialises in fostering active participation through socio-educational interventions with youth, both in youth centres and through detached youth work. We also work extensively with gender and youth mainstreaming and global citizenship education, designing learning activities for workshops and training. We can work together, share best practices and discuss new approaches and methodologies.
We can also contribute with our experience working in international cooperation projects on the European level since we have years of experience working in Erasmus+ projects (KA1, KA2), European Solidarity Corps and CERV.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
We would like to join the ALF Network for many reasons. Our motivation comes from a desire to expand our network within the EuroMed region, fostering cross-cultural exchange and contributing to more tolerant and cohesive societies. We are eager to engage in intercultural dialogue with organisations from other countries, both internally among our staff and with members of our local community. Furthermore, we seek to collaborate on intercultural projects within the EuroMed region, promote youth and female empowerment, foster active participation, actively combat hate speech, and address the challenges posed by climate change. Finally, we are interested in enhancing our capacity building on an international level, exchanging best practices with other organisations, and connecting with those sharing similar missions and areas of work, both in Spain and abroad.
