HALO Foundation (2019) is a small local non-governmental organization registered for public benefit activities. Our team is small and close-knit. Most of our initiatives are carried out voluntarily, with the support of external volunteers and the expertise of our like-minded partners on specific projects. HALO Foundation is based in Haskovo, and its mission is to reverse the trends of depopulation, neglect, and abandonment in Haskovo and the region. Our work focuses on small settlements where people feel abandoned and overlooked.
Mission and Objectives
HALO Foundation is based in Haskovo, and its mission is to reverse the trends of depopulation, neglect, and abandonment in Haskovo and the region. Our work focuses on small settlements where people feel abandoned and overlooked.
Our organization focuses on three priority areas: sustainable development and good governance, environmental protection, and the preservation of our way of life and culture. The vision of the HALO Foundation is to accelerate the development and prosperity of local communities in Haskovo and the region by implementing programs in these three priority areas. Our goal is to turn the region into an attractive center for young people — a place where they can develop professionally and rely on institutional support; a place where they can raise their children in a safe and peaceful environment; a place where they can enjoy the unique nature and biodiversity of the Eastern Rhodopes and the wetlands along the Maritsa River, as well as the invaluable cultural heritage of the ancient Thracians, combined with the rich traditions and folklore of the Thracian region.
Main Projects / Activities
The campaign "Removing Old Martenitsa from Trees" by the HALO Foundation aims to combine tradition with ecological awareness. The martenitsas, which people hang on trees during the March celebrations, are symbols of health and well-being. However, after the celebration ends, these martenitsas often remain on the trees and become waste, which negatively impacts the environment.
The HALO Foundation organizes this campaign to encourage people to remove old martenitsas from trees and replace them with new, cleaner, and more sustainable alternatives. The main idea is to reduce pollution and raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources.
Part of the campaign may include organized events where volunteers and city residents gather the old martenitsas, as well as creative initiatives related to making new and innovative ways of celebrating the holiday.
The "One Tree for Every Child" campaign by the HALO Foundation is an initiative designed to inspire children to engage in nature conservation and participate in tree planting activities. The campaign is held annually and includes various activities that encourage young participants to learn about environmental issues and contribute to solving them.
The main goal of the campaign is to plant trees in different parts of Bulgaria and create new green spaces. Each participant receives a tree, which, with the support of volunteers and organizers, is planted in a specific location. In addition to planting trees, the campaign often includes educational sessions that teach children about the importance of ecology and the need to care for nature.
This initiative also serves as a way to foster engagement in environmental protection from an early age, with children learning that everyone can make a difference and contribute to a better future.
The Civil Budget Program is an original program of the HALO Foundation aimed at creating more opportunities for civic participation. It helps bridge the gap between citizens and the administration.
HALO Foundation is a non-profit organization whose main mission is to activate the population and encourage civic participation in Bulgaria, with a special focus on the Haskovo region. In line with its core activities and in support of local administrations and communities, the foundation created, implements, and maintains an individualized product—the Civil Budget Program. The objectives of the program include:
Deepening the practical application of democratic principles;
Building stronger and more united communities;
Increasing trust in the administration;
Ensuring more impartial and effective use of public funds.
This initiative serves as a tool for improving interaction between citizens and local authorities, creating a platform for more responsible governance and sustainable development of communities.
The HALO Foundation is a coordinator for the South Central Region of the "Learn Clubs" working under the original STEM program of the Say Hi Foundation. This program is intended for students aged 13 to 19. It combines scientific approaches and the generation of solutions to local environmental and social problems. The innovative program is based on a problem-based approach, interactive lessons, and practical activities, where students work in small teams of two or three on a specific topic of their choice. The aim of the program is for learning to occur through experience and be driven by the natural curiosity of students. With the support of teachers from partner schools and under the guidance of mentors from scientific fields, students in the program explore, experiment, and create various prototypes to contribute to environmental protection, combating climate change, and solving local social issues.
