The House of World Cultures is a division of Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin KBB GmbH (“Culture Events of the Federal Government in Berlin”), a non-profit organisation to which the Berliner Festspiele and the Berlin International Film Festival also belong. It is financed by the Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM) (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media). The House of World Cultures receives project-specific funding from the Federal Foreign Office.Mission and Objectives
The House of World Cultures is one of the leading centres for contemporary arts from Africa, Asia and Latin America and a venue for projects exploding artistic boundaries. Non-European cultures are presented in visual arts, dance, theatre, music, literature, film and the media, and engaged into a public discourse with European cultures. The emphasis is placed on contemporary cultures and current developments, as well as on the artistic and cultural consequences of globalisation. Priority is attached to projects exploring the potential of intercultural co-operation.Main Projects / Activities
The projects of the House of World Cultures are developed and implemented through the close co-operation of international experts, curators and artists. An international program council advises the House of World Cultures in developing themes and projects. The national and international reputation of the House is based on its innovative and experimental presentation of fine arts, dance, theatre, film, literature, performances and music, and on its international conferences. As an extremely flexible venue, the House of World Cultures is able to stage events all the year round. Regional or theme-based interdisciplinary projects are the emphasis; in addition, the performance festival “IN TRANSIT” is held. The events open up new horizons and make artistic and cultural boundary crossing possible.
