General Information

Hebrew Union College (HUC)–Jerusalem, as the host institution of the Teachers’ Lounge program, brings a long-standing record of sound financial stewardship and organizational stability. HUC is an established academic and non-profit organization with a robust infrastructure that ensures transparent fiscal management, compliance with donor requirements, and long-term sustainability for its programs.
The Teachers’ Lounge program is supported by a diverse funding base, including philanthropic foundations, Jewish Federations, and individual donors. This diversification significantly reduces reliance on any single source of income and strengthens the program’s ability to maintain continuity. Additionally, HUC’s Advancement Office actively cultivates new donor partnerships to expand funding streams and secure multi-year commitments that sustain the program beyond individual or one-off grants.
The Teachers' Lounge headquarters staff comprises a team of seven members and is supported by the Hebrew Union College's financial and education departments.

Mission and Objectives

Hebrew Union College (HUC) - Jerusalem’s mission is to foster a vibrant and inclusive Jewish future grounded in the values of pluralism, justice, equality, and interfaith understanding. Through academic excellence and innovative educational programs, HUC cultivates leaders committed to strengthening Jewish life, advancing social responsibility, and building bridges across communities.
The Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem, established in 1963, embodies these values in the Israeli context. It serves as a hub for dialogue, scholarship, and community engagement, promoting shared society, democratic values, and cross-cultural understanding.

Main Projects / Activities

The Teachers’ Lounge (TL) is a flagship program of HUC–Jerusalem, established in 2014 to promote tolerance, dialogue, and a shared society among Jewish and Arab educators in Israel. Through weekly meetings in six centers within mixed cities and regions, including Jerusalem, Ramle, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Haifa, Western Galilee, and the Negev, teachers from separate education systems come together in a safe, facilitated space to engage in open dialogue, explore identity, and develop tools for a shared society within their region. Co-led by Jewish and Arab experienced and expert facilitators, the program combines personal encounters in groups, space for artistic expression, site-based learning, and joint local educational initiatives led by the program’s alumni members in and outside schools. Participants gain multicultural sensitivity, innovative pedagogical skills, and a sense of agency to promote equality and respect within their schools and communities by sharing insights and knowledge.
The Teachers’ Lounge Program in memory of Shira Banki, advances HUC’s mission by bringing together Jewish and Arab educators for a transformative process of professional training, which involves learning, in-depth dialogue, and multicultural collaboration.
The program’s goal is to nurture educators as agents of change who model tolerance, mutual respect, and civic responsibility, contributing to a more cohesive and compassionate Israeli society. The program aims to improve the climate of Israel's multicultural life by mobilizing educators to raise awareness and discuss with their students about important matters such as racism, prejudice, hate, and mistrust between the two sectors. Recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Education, the vision behind “The Teachers’ Lounge – in memory of Shira Banki is an Israeli society that wears its diversity proudly and that heeds the call for mutual recognition and for dialogue among its communities of residents.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Hebrew Union College-Jerusalem and its Teachers' Lounge program can host at its Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem roundtables, conferences, seminars, and training courses for international, national, and regional stakeholders, active in the fields of Shared Society, multiculturalism, Education, International Academic Relations, etc., and develop joint research on intercultural education programs and educators' professional development training programs.
Our Teachers' Lounge Program maintains an alumni network of about 100 active members and over 500 total alumni since its establishment in 2014. Hence, we can share activities and educational initiatives that take place as part of this framework with the Anna Lindh Network members and share our vast professional networks.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We wish to learn about other international NGOs that share similar interests and vision to partner with our organization and develop joint programs and educational initiatives between Israel and the rest of the EuroMED region. We seek to learn about new models and successful programs that can enhance our local, national, and international work to expand and enrich our skills, knowledge, and expertise.
