Prof. Ibrahim Abouleish (1937 – 2017) founded SEKEM in 1977, an initiative which fosters sustainable development towards a future where every human being can unfold their individual potential. As part of his vision, Prof. Abouleish established Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development in 2009; the first university in the Middle East declaring sustainable development as its main guiding principal. Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development was inaugurated in 2012 with the aim to pioneer the introduction of the concepts and principles of sustainable development to its students and to the Egyptian community at large. The non-profit oriented university includes the faculties of Engineering, Pharmacy , Business and Economics, Physical Therapy, and Organic Agriculture. The degree programs offered at Heliopolis University address the concepts and theories of sustainable development through a multi-disciplinary holistic approach that integrates teaching, learning, research, and practice.
Mission and Objectives
Mission:
At Heliopolis University, we empower our students to be the champions of sustainable development in different spheres of life. We provide a fertile ground for new ideas that lead to further research and study. Our education combines teaching, research, and practice with a uniquely humanistic core program to develop curious and creative minds.
Objectives:
- Provide a high quality and challenging educational and research experience in which students can develop both individually and intellectually.
- Enable students to gain a broad understanding of the issues related to sustainable development and relevant scientific disciplines.
- Develop students’ key ethical values that will enable them to be competitive in the job market and/or manage their own enterprises with a vision to unceasingly contribute to community development.
- Help students identify and achieve their own individual goals and make a valuable contribution to their society and to the world at large.
- Develop independent persons immersed in the humanities who can identify and resolve problems creatively, individually, and communally.
Main Projects / Activities
Entrepreneurship Center for Social Impact:
Dedicated to empowering youth during their entrepreneurial journey & ensuring their projects answer to the needs of the community & society.
Rural Development Center:
Dedicated to the transformation of the rural areas through diverse initiatives & projects, and meeting their needs with services provided by HU community.
Education for Sustainable Development Center:
Dedicated to providing quality education for HU community, including students & staff, via various programs for the sustainable development.
Integrative Health Center:
Dedicated to prioritizing the health & wellbeing of the community through several initiatives & projects.
Carbon Footprint Center:
Dedicated to offsetting carbon emissions as well as raising awareness & knowledge on climate actions in the MENA region.
