General Information

Human Rights Association for Community Development in Assiut was established in 2004, registration number 596/2004 under the umbrella of the ministry of social solidarity and justice, It is a non-governmental organization that works to promote and protect the human rights of Egyptian citizens, especially in upper Egypt community. The association is concerned about marginalized groups including children, women, youth, and people with disabilities in Egypt. The association enjoys the consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations since 2012, and also has had a strategic partnership with the European Union since 2023.

Mission and Objectives

A leading human rights organisation works in the field of defending human rights issues and empowering society, especially marginalized groups, to enjoy rights and freedoms by raising society's awareness of democracy and the mechanisms of its practice, monitoring human rights violations, to gather potentials of society to address them and to form alliances with other entities.

Main Projects / Activities

Over the past five years, the Human Rights Association implemented five major projects funded by the European Union, the Swedish Diakonia Foundation, and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA). Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation successfully managed and delivered all projects through strong operational and financial capacity.
Key areas of intervention included:
Combating Irregular Migration & Environmental Protection:
Implemented the Youth Employment Initiatives in Environmental Projects funded by MSMEDA and the European Union, creating job opportunities for 55 young men and women while improving environmental and public health conditions in targeted communities.
Women’s Economic Empowerment:
Implemented the Women’s Microenterprise Development in Assiut Governorate project (EU-funded), supporting women in 11 districts to achieve economic independence through skills development and small enterprise support, in partnership with local civil society organisations.
Combating Domestic Violence:
Implemented the EU-funded project Helping Those Who Suffer in Silence to reduce violence against women and girls in 11 districts in Assiut, strengthening community protection mechanisms.
Fighting Early Marriage & Gender-Based Violence:
Implemented the Too Young to Marry project (funded by Diakonia), establishing a coalition of 25 civil society organisations to combat early marriage and integrate gender-sensitive strategies into their institutional plans.
Supporting Prisoners’ Families:
Participated as an implementing partner in the EU-funded project Respect to the Rights of Families of Prisoners, building a referral network of 36 CSOs across Minya, Assiut, and Sohag to provide protection and support services.

Our organization can contribute to the Anna Lindh Foundation Network in Egypt by strengthening dialogue spaces that connect civil society, youth, and policymakers around shared Mediterranean values.
