The Institute of Muslim-Christian Studies, founded in 1977, is one of the first institutes in the world dedicated to Islamic-Christian dialogue and to strengthening relationships among believers of different religions or denominations. The Institute was directly affiliated with Saint Joseph University of Beirut to give it greater scope and scientific rigor in approaching religion. It was also established to build on a solid foundation and in a place that could ensure the pursuit of “truth,” enriched by respect for differences and the embrace of diversity, in a spirit of friendship, freedom of expression, and a desire for discovery, listening, and openness.
Mission and Objectives
In general, since the Institute of Muslim-Christian Studies is affiliated with the Faculty of Religious Sciences at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (Lebanon), its mission aligns with that of the Faculty. More specifically, it aims to deepen mutual understanding between Muslims and Christians.
The two religious traditions present today in Lebanon, confronted in their diversity by the challenges of modernity, seek to respond to the vital questions facing contemporary humanity. To this end, the Institute provides instruction based on an objective and interdisciplinary approach.
Dialogue is now a necessity shared by many Muslims and Christians. The Institute aims to offer spaces for meeting, avenues for joint action, and programs for raising awareness or training in interreligious mediation.
