The Institute of Research and Development for Mountain Regions of the Mediterranean Islands (MountMed) is a non-profit organisation founded in 2021 to enhance the quality of life in mountain regions. We empower local communities, support grassroots initiatives, and promote sustainable environments in Cyprus, its mountains, and beyond. Based in the Troodos Mountain Range of Cyprus, MountMed aspires to become a beacon of knowledge, innovation, and action for the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems and resources across the Mediterranean islands, advancing sustainable development. We also strive to be a leading reference centre for research, knowledge dissemination, and policy influence in territorial development—an approach that designates development that is endogenous, spatially integrated, and locally driven. This means empowering local actors at multiple levels to co-design and implement sustainable actions that strengthen their communities. Guided by our research-action principle, combined with active community engagement and strategic partnerships, we bridge local efforts with global expertise, drive innovation and sustainability, and strive to build resilient and prosperous mountain regions across the Mediterranean and beyond.
MountMed is committed to the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems and resources. It focuses on three key areas essential for the sustainable endogenous development of mountain regions:
Mountain Economy and Entrepreneurship
Environment and Climate
Mountain Culture, History, and Creativity

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
The MountMed Institute is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to research, education and sustainable mountain development, focusing on Mediterranean island mountain regions. Established in 2021 by an interdisciplinary and international network of scientists and institutions specialising in mountain studies, MountMed is the only research-performing organisation in Cyprus that focuses exclusively on mountains, landscapes and communities. MountMed combines academic and practical approaches, leveraging the expertise of its scientific partners and members alongside the indigenous knowledge of local actors. The Institute engages in advocacy and fosters community-driven projects to promote sustainable, but also regenerative, territorial mountain development. MountMed’s mission is to tackle Mediterranean mountain regions' socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and economic challenges through scholarship, advising leaders and policymakers, actionable research, and grassroots initiatives. Its vision is the sustainable and endogenous development of mountain regions and societies, where environmental preservation is harmonised with socio-economic progress.
MountMed is a proud member of the Mountain Partnership, a United Nations alliance committed to improving the lives of mountain peoples and protecting mountain environments worldwide. Our participation in the Partnership enhances our international perspective and capacity for cooperation on the shared challenges faced by mountain regions.
Through participation in the Network, the Institute is well-positioned to expand its activities internationally, building bridges between the people of mountainous Cyprus and partners across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Near East. This engagement will strengthen transnational cooperation and create new channels for dialogue and solidarity among mountain communities.
Cyprus's constitutionally enshrined multiculturalism offers a strong foundation for promoting the Network’s core principles, particularly respect for human rights, cultural diversity, and social inclusion. MountMed’s efforts align fully with these principles, especially in advocating for the rights of mountain populations who often face geographic and socioeconomic inequalities.
As a dynamic research hub, MountMed contributes distinct value through its strong network of collaborations with European universities and research centers - specialised in mountain studies, but also and very importantly, will mountain landscapes local actors. The Institute actively supports cross-border cooperation and knowledge-based development initiatives aligned with European and Mediterranean priorities. A dedicated department within the Institute focuses on mountain culture, history, and creative innovation, supporting the preservation and promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage through contemporary, participatory and community-led methodologies.
MountMed’s expertise is also underpinned by its high-profile leadership, which includes political, business, and scientific figures with longstanding engagement in mountain policy, territorial development, and regional planning. The Institute has a proven track record in designing and implementing impactful initiatives—spanning sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and integrated territorial development—supported by EU programmes, international donors, and philanthropic foundations.
In this context, MountMed aspires to act as the Network’s anchor in Cyprus, advancing shared values and sustainable solutions for the future of Mediterranean mountain territories.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
MountMed seeks to join the Anna Lindh Foundation Network to actively contribute to its mission of fostering intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding, and inclusive development across the Euro-Mediterranean region. As an institute dedicated to research, education and sustainable mountain development - particularly in Mediterranean islands - MountMed shares the ALF’s commitment to cultural diversity, social inclusion, and peacebuilding through grassroots and institutional cooperation.
We believe that the Institute and the Network share a common vision grounded in intercultural dialogue, human dignity, and sustainable development. These values are reflected in MountMed’s interdisciplinary work, which connects scientific research with community engagement to address the needs and potential of remote mountain territories.
MountMed is headquartered in Cyprus, within the UNESCO Global Geopark of Troodos—a mountainous region of outstanding geological, ecological, and cultural significance. While the Troodos range serves as a model for sustainable mountain development, Cyprus’s broader cultural diversity and strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa provide a unique environment for connecting diverse narratives, traditions, and perspectives. The Troodos landscape, with its rich natural and cultural heritage, provides both a symbolic and practical platform for promoting dialogue between people and place. It serves as a living laboratory and a “school of the mountain” where indigenous knowledge is shared and co-created across borders and generations.
By joining the ALF Network, MountMed seeks to expand its collaboration with partners with a common understanding and approach, particularly in areas such as intercultural dialogue, regenerative territorial development, social inclusion, and youth engagement. We believe the Network offers a powerful platform to highlight and connect underrepresented communities, such as those in mountainous and rural regions, within the broader Euro-Mediterranean dialogue.
