The Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, or Instituut voor Oosters Christendom (IVOC), was founded in 1991 in order to continue the work of the Institute of Byzantine and Ecumenical Studies of the Assumptionist Fathers in the Netherlands. IVOC is a non-profit foundation closely linked to the Radboud University of Nijmegen (RU) and registered as ANBI by the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK 41057572). IvOC has a director / senior researcher, a general manager / librarian / lecturer, an editor for its online Platform Oosters Christendom, and a communication officer. It hosts several guest researchers every year, has several associate researcher and two volunteers for the library.
Mission and Objectives
The main purpose of the Institute is the scholarly study of Eastern Christianity. This purpose is achieved by providing information to the public, educating students, carrying out research, organising conferences and public lectures, collecting printed and digital resources and publishing the peer-reviewed scholarly Journal of Eastern Christian Studies as well as the book series Eastern Christian Studies (Publisher Brill, Leiden). One of the objectives of the Institute is to develop new projects in research and education and to raise funds for these.
