The Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development (ICSD) connects religion and ecology and galvanizes faith communities’ action and teaching on environmental sustainability. ICSD manifests these goals primarily through several current projects: building and deploying multi-faith moral leadership as a force for ambitious and equitable climate policy; engaging on the cutting edge of digital storytelling on faith and climate through short videos on social media; and interfaith action at the annual UN climate conference.
Mission and Objectives
ICSD's mission is to reveal the connection between religion and ecology and mobilize people to act.
ICSD's objectives are to:
1. Catalyze a transition to a sustainable, thriving, and spiritually-aware society through the leadership of faith communities.
2. Manifest an inter-religious vision for environmental sustainability by encouraging the cooperation and training of religious leaders, teachers, and communities on ecological issues.
3. Use current environmental challenges as a platform to unite people of many faiths around common values of environmental stewardship.
Main Projects / Activities
ICSD manifests these objectives primarily through five projects. First, ICSD thought leadership on religion and ecology delivers our unique faith-based ecological perspective via short video messages on social media, with a recent campaign with Nas Daily garnering over 15 million video views. Second, ICSD engages in the Faith Inspired Renewable Energy Project, in cooperation with faith institutions in Africa and an Israeli renewable energy developer, to deploy solar fields in Africa. Third, the Interfaith Eco Seminary Engagement Project promotes teaching of ecologically informed theological education, to spur courageous moral leadership for sustainability. Fourth, ICSD publishes and distributes Eco Bible, a groundbreaking commentary on the Hebrew Bible, and the Eco Preacher resource for Christian pastors. Fifth, ICSD co-organizes interfaith environmental conferences that amplify the voices of religious leaders and scientists on spirituality and ecology.
