The Irfoss institute, founded in 2010 to connect different people, fields of specialisation and interests, has brought together thousands of individuals and professionals in just a few years, channelling them into projects with an international scope on four different continents. The commitment to international research, with a strong social orientation and an ethical approach, combined with the promotion of communicative forms and methodologies of visual anthropology, reportage and visual storytelling, has allowed Irfoss A.p.s to be inaugurated in 2016, made up of three specialised but interconnected networks: Irfoss Visual Network, Irfoss Research Network, Irfoss Ethics Network.
Mission and Objectives
Irfoss A.p.s. was established in Padua in 2010, with the aim of carrying out activities of promotion and social utility, in particular
- The development of projects, research, events and initiatives of social and cultural utility, with particular regard to the issues of promoting cultural and intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, promoting active volunteering, etc.;
- The promotion of an ethical use of the image through the dissemination of practices and issues dear to slow photojournalism, in order to increase the social impact of the photographic medium;
- The consolidation and promotion of a culture of encounter with the Other and the pursuit of a social commitment aimed at disadvantaged groups and segments of the population;
- The creation of a space for collaboration, meeting, debate and exchange of knowledge, experience and skills;
- The promotion of constant exchange between networks at local and global level
- The promotion of an ethical and conscious use of new technologies.
Main Projects / Activities
Since 2010, Irfoss has promoted several international expeditions allowing young Italian students and researchers to take part in them. In the last two years, the association has focused on promoting an ethical use of the medium of photography through training and image education courses, both basic and advanced, the organisation of meetings, conferences, seminars and debates with authors and professionals in the field (more than 40 activities per year), as well as the participation in and organisation of exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. In particular:
- Management activities and conventions: each year, Irfoss extends its network with new conventions with national and international bodies, today collaborating with 12 universities throughout Italy, as well as being twinned with festivals on 5 continents and working with cultural enterprises and charities worldwide.
- Awareness-raising and educational activities addressed to citizens: autumn and spring training courses on ‘Theories and Techniques of the Photographic Image’; conferences on ethical and awareness-raising issues; educational seminars in collaboration with the University; thematic and professional workshops with outstanding lecturers;
- Promotion and Dissemination activities: mainly academic articles and reports;
- Participation in charitable activities on specific topics.
Since 2019 Irfoss has been organising IMP International Festival of Photojournalism, the first festival entirely dedicated to the world of photojournalism in Italy: a door, open to the city of Padua, on the stories, methods and approaches of the best international photography, an experience of total immersion in the world of current affairs and photojournalism. Through a wide diversification of the quality events on offer (exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, conferences and debates), IMP aims to transform Padua into an international reference point for the photography sector. Now in its seventh edition, with an average of 12,000 visitors per year, the festival seeks to spread awareness of photographic culture and Italy's photographic heritage by hosting exhibitions and events focusing on photographers and photojournalists and other professionals. Moreover, both the workshop activities and the ‘Talents’ section aim at training and promoting young professionals working in the field of photography.
Since 2023 Irfoss has been promoting the growth and development of the training of young professionals working in the world of photography through the organisation of an annual training course in ‘Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography’. An intensive one-year training course with the most established photojournalists, photo editors and image professionals on the international scene. A school that will allow young people to enter the professional world of visual journalism, mastering its techniques, methods and languages.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Irfoss is particularly interested in collaborating on projects related to:
- Intercultural Education: Initiatives that promote dialogue among cultures through educational and training programs for youth and adults.
- Sustainable Development: Projects focused on raising awareness and taking action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular attention to environmental and social issues.
- Photography and Media: Activities that leverage photography, photojournalism, and multimedia storytelling to foster cultural understanding, highlight social challenges, and advocate for human rights. Irfoss is especially interested in promoting slow journalism, which emphasizes depth, accuracy, and the ethical representation of stories over sensationalism.
- Youth and Women Empowerment: Activities aimed at improving inclusion and enhancing the role of women and young people in local and international communities.
- Culture and Creativity: Collaborations to promote arts, cultural heritage, and creativity as tools for social change.
Through the network, Irfoss aims to develop innovative projects that blend education, sustainability, and media, while sharing best practices to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive global society.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
Irfoss is interested in joining the Anna Lindh Foundation network to expand opportunities for intercultural dialogue, international cooperation, and the promotion of active citizenship. Irfoss' mission aligns with the Foundation's core principles, particularly in fostering dialogue among Mediterranean cultures, promoting sustainability, and building inclusive and resilient societies. The association believes that photography, photojournalism, and media are powerful tools for storytelling and raising awareness about cultural diversity and shared global challenges. By joining the network, Irfoss aims to contribute to initiatives that highlight underrepresented voices and stories, promoting ethical and thoughtful communication aligned with the principles of slow journalism.
Through participation in the network, Irfoss seeks to share experiences, develop synergies with international partners, and access resources and tools to enhance the impact of its activities in these fields.
