LARGO Residências has the purpose of contributing to local development, through the concretization of cultural activities and social businesses, boosters in artistic creation and stimulation, as well as boosters for community involvement and integration. This is done in a continuity and growth logic, so that they allow for the assurance of their own sustainability simultaneously.Mission and Objectives
The main goal is to promote culture, creativity and knowledge as decisive factors for success and sustainability of the processes of social and urbanistic regeneration. By providing research, creation and maturation conditions to artists that want to reside here, the focus of this project is to sustain a building ready to take in and produce works from, particularly, distinct artistic areas. Generally, from the cultural and creative sector. The focus is also to receive research projects and academic work from fields so diverse as anthropology, sociology, psychology or architecture. In this scenario, the technical and production means necessary are assured, as well as specialized knowledge, which will allow the successful monitoring and execution of each project. The creation basis of each proposal needs to include at least one of the following inspiration and concern points: the physical and humane property of the neighbourhood.Main Projects / Activities
The cultural activities of LARGO Residencias Cooperative are developed around the following axes: 1. Artistic Creation: with our artistic residency program we provide research, creation and maturation conditions for the work of artists who wish to reside here in a space prepared to receive and produce works from different artistic areas in particular, and from the cultural and creative sector in general, as well as to receive research projects and academic works from in the field of social sciences and the social and solidarity economy. In this scenario, the necessary technical and production means are guaranteed, along with the specialized knowledge of our team that will allow the proper monitoring and realization of each project, and the basis for the creation of all the proposed artistic projects must contemplate at least one of the following points of inspiration and concern: the physical heritage, the human heritage, and the social problems of the neighborhood. 2. Cultural Programming: Regular programming activities in our own space and in partnership with local or national artists and institutions. This ax of activity contributes to cultural dynamization and artistic promotion, supporting both emerging and professional artists and the free access to cultural programming in a marginalized area. 3. Artistic Formation: We intend to give continuity to this fundamental area for the integrated education of individuals, through regular classes, masterclasses and workshops, in performing arts, for various ages. 4. Partnership projects for social inclusion and local development: promoting socio-cultural projects involving the communities and other local organizations in the area we operate, having as priority the inclusion of the marginalized population. In recent years new have been born as a response to the challenges of social intervention that are part of the Local Development Plan designed by a consortium of local institutions, in partnership with the Municipality of Lisbon with the collaboration of Junta de Freguesia de Arroios and managed by the Aga Khan Portugal Foundation. On the aging axis and in partnership with Santa Casa de Misericórdia, the CENTRO project was born; on the intercultural axis and in partnership with the Lisbon Metro, the "Next Stop" festival was born as a showcase and creation of projects by emigrant artists living in Lisbon ; as a project that proposed to record and document the entire local development plan with artistic, informative and research., objects in a logic of traversal thematic, ESCUTA was born. In 2020 we start Residências Refúgio project, funded by the municipality in partnership with the Agha Khan Foundation and Forum Refugio Portugal, for the inclusion of refugee through mediation. We are also the promoter of the annual "Bairro em Festa" Festival, with about 25 thousand annual visitors, as well as a set of projects created and developed in local partnership networks, which cross the area of culture with other sectors such as social inclusion, urbanism, citizenship, sustainability and housing, education and employability. Over the past 11 years, we have involved in our programmes and initiatives more than 3500 culture workers (local, national and foreign), about 3000 community participants (in participatory projects), more than 1200 punctual activities, 16 own creations, 13 permanent projects. It also participates in about 8 local and international collaborative networks and has participated in more than 55 national and international conferences. How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Largo can contribute to the Network by: 1. Stimulating residencies, programming and training in various areas of the creative and artistic sector and other activities of a socio-cultural nature and promoting socio-cultural projects of community and territory involvement where it operates, having as priority public vulnerable population, contributing to social inclusion and cohesion, and related activities. 2. To participate in and contribute to the creation of territorial collaboration networks and local development programmes, with multi-sector entities. 3. To develop social businesses that contribute simultaneously to the social and economic sustainability of the Cooperative, and to the promotion of the local economy and employability. Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
We establish partnerships with about 70 entities at different levels. Within a vast network of local organizations, we partner with Aga Khan Foundation, local retirement homes, schools, civil society organizations and organizations working specific groups such as migrants, refugees, homeles, sex workers and people with addictions. These partnerships consist in creating projects together for multi sectoral/more effective responses to address the vulnerabilities of these groups. Further, LARGO partnership with Lisbon City Council, DGARTES (Ministry of Culture), Arroios Parish Council (the neighborhood administrative sector), EGEAC and Gulbenkian Foundation, that have been supporting us financially, funding our ongoing mission, as well as projects implementation, execution, evaluation and monitorization. At an international level, we have been developing a variety of partnerships to promote more inclusive development policies including the right to housing, non-speculative urban development, social economy and responsible tourism. Joining the re:Kreators (an european network to promote sustainable, social and participative urban development) and Placemaking Europe, we have been participating in international policy discussions with impact on the European Union’s Urban Agenda discussion. Further, we collaborate with Eutropian, and COOPTERR, a strategic partnership for cultural, social, economical and territorial dimensions regrouping social & solidarity economy organizations. We believe that joining Anna Lindh Fondation as a partner will open Largo to new projects and ideas, as well as enabling the creation of new partnerships.
