LASAL - Mediterranean Festival of Journalism and Photography:
LASAL is a platform to promote and defend quality journalism and documentary
photography. But above all, LASAL is a party. An event that breaks down the
barrier between top journalism professionals and the general public. A shared
space for both students and established authors. A platform to restore faith
in ethical journalism and democratic values.
Three days of talks, debates, workshops, book presentations, street exhibitions,
and photo screenings in exceptional venues such as the La Calàndria
cinema or right on Ocata beach.

Defense of ethical journalism as an essential tool for democracy.
Promotion and protection of photography as an artistic language and as a collective of professionals who must assert their rights.
A cross-cutting approach to human rights, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion.
Objectives
With a professional structure, top-level partnerships, and a transformative approach, the festival seeks to create artistic, social, and territorial value.
To showcase the best contemporary mediterranean journalism, with a critical and committed perspective.
To support the creation, training, and professionalization of emerging authors in the fields of documentary photography and journalism.
To generate new audiences and bring visual language closer to the public, especially in peripheral areas or those distant from major cultural centers.
To act as a platform for the internationalization of journalists working in the mediterreanean region.
Main Projects / Activities
LASAL
LASAL is a festival held annually in the coastal town of El Masnou, near Barcelona, during the month of June. The festival brings together journalists, photographers, human rights defenders, and communicators of all kinds to discuss the state of journalism, freedom of expression, and human rights around the world — with a special focus on the Mediterranean region.
The festival includes activities such as:
TALKS & WORKSHOPS
Talks and screenings of work by leading journalism and photojournalism professionals take place at the cinema and the auditorium. There are also specialized workshops and debates held in the La Calàndria workshop space.
PHOTOGRAPHIC INSTALLATIONS
As part of the festival program, participatory installations have been created with young photographers from Spain and abroad, along with professional photo exhibitions designed to engage local residents and promote the festival.
SCREENINGS ON THE BEACH
Ocata Beach hosts documentary film screenings, photojournalism projects, and the awards ceremony for the winners of the Carles Costa Student Photojournalism Prize. The evening concludes with a live music concert.
FESTIVAL AWARDS
Three photojournalism awards are presented during LASAL:
ZAMPA Award, for professional photojournalists
Carles Costa Award, for photojournalism students
ZAMPA Jove, for mobile photography, aimed at local teenagers from El Masnou
BOOK PRESENTATIONS
The auditorium at the La Calàndria Foundation and the CuatreCincU bookstore serve as ideal venues for the presentation of journalism and photography books.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Our festival is centered on journalism and visual storytelling, but we aim for it to be a space for dialogue and collaboration on human rights, the fight against disinformation, and the promotion of democracy in the Mediterranean region. We want to serve as a meeting point for human rights defenders and other key regional actors, as well as a platform to foster network-based collaboration among them.
The festival is capable of hosting meetings of other Mediterranean organizations within a welcoming environment that encourages debate and collaborative work.
Our network of partner organizations includes humanitarian groups such as Médecins Sans Frontières and Open Arms, as well as cultural institutions like Revista 5W, Spain’s Ministry of Culture, and local foundations. We want to be a bridge between these two worlds.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
We learned about this network through IEMED, and we see it as a perfect platform to strengthen our relationships with other organizations in the Mediterranean region. Although we are a very young festival, the organizations behind it have over 20 years of experience. We understand that internationalizing our festival and placing it firmly on the Mediterranean map is key to achieving our goals—especially at this pivotal moment in history.
