General Information

Meerkat Recordings: is a Non-Profit DIY music collective and record label founded in 2011. As a platform for transnational musical encounters we have arranged festivals, clubs and radio shows with sounds inspired by rebetika, rai, dabke and tsifteteli, as well as dub, Asian underground, cumbia, italo and jungle/ drum & bass.

Meerkat Recordings has released 30+ records with collaborating artists ranging from the Mountains of Meteora to the Asian Underground.

During the latest 5 years we have focused on music from the Eastern Mediterranean and Klubb Maqam, featuring live music collaborations with musicians from Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Asia Minor and the Balkans and planning to expand our network further across the former Anatolian/ Ottoman region.

Mission and Objectives

Our objective is to provide a platform for Eastern Mediterranean live music, DJing, dance and vibes by means of rhythms, scales and improvisations that evoke collective memories and affections that transcend barriers, borders and languages.

Our mission is to make music a bridge and an expression connecting us in ways words cannot.

We are dedicated to building connections, sharing experiences, and strengthening the collective voice of the Mediterranean people.

Main Projects / Activities

Klubb Maqam* explores musical encounters and crossroads in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Gathering musicians, dancers and experts inspired by century long Ottoman and Arabic traditions we create spaces for people to meet, learn, and collaborate.

Since 2021 we have arranged Klubb Maqam events in Stockholm (Antikvariat Verklighetsflykt, Kulturhuset Cyklopen, Time Bar) and Göteborg (Folk, Bivac, Cyrano, Kulturhuset Oceanen).

*maqam is arabic for place/ position + a melody type/ improvisation technique
