General Information

The Lebanese Art Cinema Association: Metropolis Cinema has a Board of Directors and four full-time paid staff, including a Director. In addition there is a part-time Press Attache. The NAAS project under the Metropolis leadership has a Director, and an Executive Committee made up of four members. Budgetary resources available in a year: $146,000 in 2009, 200,000 in 2010. Sources of funding include: Young Arab Theatre Fund, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, French Embassy in Beirut, and European Union. Sponsors (such as Arte) Private donars Main partners involved in the organization’s projects include: Beirut D.C., Instituto Italiano, Institut Cervantes, and Goethe Institut. For the NAAS project main partners include: ArteEast, NYC; Cinémathèque de Tanger, Tangiers; Al-Balad Theatre, Amman; Doxbox, Damascus; SEMAT, Cairo; Chrysalide, Algeria; ESAV: Ecole Supérieure des Arts Visuels, Marrakesh; Al-Kasaba Theatre and Cinémathèque, Ramallah; Jesuit Cultural Center, Alexandria; Cinemafricart, Tunisia, with support from Arte, Cultures France, Cinema Tropical, the Ford Foundation, and OSI.

Mission and Objectives

Metropolis is the first art-house cinema to open its doors in Lebanon on the premises of the Empire Sofil Cinemas. This space aims to ensure its audience a permanent and sustainable access to a diversified and enriching film production. One of our projects for which we seek to solicit support is the NAAS network (http://dev.arteeast.org/pages/naas/). The mission of NAAS (Network of Arab Arthouse Screens) is as follows: Shared Resources, Collective Projects and Economies of Scale * Establish a network of partnerships to facilitate and ease the acquisition of film rights * Provide a virtual theater chain to present Arab cinema * Curate and tour special NAAS film programs * Organize network-wide workshops diverse aspects of cinema culture * Cultivate NAAS partnerships with similar regional networks throughout the world * Create a shared bank of information and resources about Arab cinema * Educate and empower the audience of the future by presenting programs dedicated to young people in the region
