Sources of funding: Monthly membership fees Donors’ financial contribution Concerts’ tickets A yearly subsidy by Syros - Hermoupolis Municipality. Our actions are based on four areas. 1. Choir Music Education - Music and vocal technique training through weekly rehearsals, music history and theory learning. 2. Musical performances - Choir songs, often accompanied by an orchestra. 3. Partnerships - Collaborations with renowned folk and contemporary musicians and composers / Interdisciplinary partnerships for thematic sociocultural events. 4. Community outreach initiatives - Choral art seminars in schools / Open rehearsals Our main partners are sociocultural institutions (visual arts group Deforme / Apano Meria Social Cooperative / Aigaio live Broadcasting company), public authorities (South Aegean Region / Syros Ermoypolis Municipality) and private companies.Mission and Objectives
The history of this tiny island of the Cyclades is largely multicultural. Inhabited since ancient times by distinct ethnic groups which left their cultural traces on the island, Syros received heavy waves of immigrants, while till now Orthodox and Catholics harmoniously co-exist. Current social stratification varies from shipyard workers to students of the University of the Aegean with a department of Fine Arts and Systems Design; from Commercial Law court and other public employees to digital nomads from all over the world, who move, work and live here. In M.O.S - Syros Music Association, we regard differences as a value-adding component and we capitalise on the derived abundance. All voices (both literally and metaphorically) come together to create a ‘unique body’. We envision to build bridges, in regards both to people and sound. Senior citizens and young generation, folk traditions of bouzouki and contemporary soundscapes, in an attempt to create our collective sound narrative. M.O.S Mission: to bring together people with different sociocultural and religious identities, through music and choir singing; to increase our vocal and perceptual flexibility and enlarge our and the audiences’ world view through the lens of collective music expression and joint creation process; to maintain and reinforce the existence of an open, welcoming and respectful singing community where all feel valued, belonging and responsible for; to celebrate unity and coexistence, inspire ourselves and our audiences, with forward-thinking choir-based art projects, creating long-lasting experiences, as catalyst for positive change in the society. Objectives: to create the environment for people of different ages and social background to meet, express themselves and sing together, promoting teamwork and community cohesion; to empower all members in the process of reclaiming their own, true, deep, voice; to open up wider in other art genres and develop multidisciplinary projects; to create community-outreach actions to reach and include socially-vulnerable groups; to extend our network of national and international reliable collaborations to develop joint innovative art programs; to utilise M.O.S collective voice to raise awareness for human rights protection, environment sustainability, gender equality and other burning social issues.Main Projects / Activities
International Choir Festival Since 2008, M.O.S organizes one of the most famous Choral Festivals in the historical Apollo theater in Ermoupolis. The International Choir Festival is ticket-free and is being held annually during the first weeks of June. It is open to Choirs from all over the world and creates the perfect occasion for discovering the way other ensembles work, their approaches to choral music; discuss, exchange views and best practices, as well as have fun altogether during leisure time exploring Syros. Choir Performances and Concerts M.O.S. frequently organises musical events, concerts and performances, which are based on choral art, often accompanied by an orchestra. We have numerous collaborations with well-known folk composers and singers and we rearrange their songs and works into polyphonic choral music. We challenge ourselves in different languages, and our performances’ repertoire ranges across different styles, often exploring how traditional folk songs, such as rembetiko or bouzouki, resonate today, in the contemporary sound. The orchestrations of musical pieces are made as unique arrangements for M.O.S. Choir by Maestro Alexandros Dimitropoulos since 2022. Choir Music Education M.O.S. weekly sessions-rehearsals cover music and vocal technique training, music history and theory learning. The aim is to improve and excel choir music technique, connect properly with the breath and gradually build performance confidence. We intend to offer all our members the space to reclaim their own personal voice, which is inherent part of one’s personality and identity, feel safe to express their voice in the ensemble and finally, create vigorously the group voice. We work with polyphonic music techniques by singing and playing a variety of musical styles such as Folk (Greek, Mediterannean, Balkan and wider European folk music ), Pop Rock and old religious chants. Our purpose is to work and cover different genres of music, extend choir members’ musical vocabulary and take all the ‘body’ of the choir into transformative music journeys and create memorable performative experiences, which transform hearts and minds. Multidisciplinary art collaborations In M.O.S. we aim to initiate meaningful connections between disciplines and organise events which incorporate diverse modalities. Some examples: Choir performance within the exhibition of visual art group Deforme, which was related to water; its symbolism, vitality and preciousness, as well as to raise awareness on global water issues. Collaboration with Apano Meria (Upper Part) of Syros, a social-cooperative enterprise that protects Natura areas of the island to create joint campaigns and take actions to raise awareness for issues concerning Syros and wider Cyclades, on beekeeping challenges, biodiversity protection, plastic recycling and waste reduction. Revival of the substantial Aigaio live Broadcasting company’s selected audio recordings and video archive in a thematic radio broadcast short series, tribute to local and wider Mediterranean folk tales, legends and narratives. In an attempt to preserve oral history, audio memorabilia and traditions transferred from generation to generation and to bring it to the present artistic scene in an immersive choir and storytelling performance. Open rehearsals - instant polyphonic ‘pop-up choir’ – outreach activities in schools Open rehearsals, in sometimes unusual venues; unexpected and spontaneous events, in communal spaces, with formats which increase audience involvement, to open wider the choir to the community. Instant polyphonic ‘pop-up choirs’ in public, with practices ‘one-plus-one’, where every member brings a friend, while passersby are also more than motivated to join in, to increase local engagement and produce a community-based choir concert, with improvisational elements. Outreach activities in schools, which are based on age-appropriate methodologies and playful imaginative approaches; so that students become acquainted with choir singing, explore the power of bringing together the different voices, as well as the passion for joint creation. How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
M.O.S. has over 70 members, who have a regular vivid presence in the weekly sessions, plus performances, and other actions, while Ermoupoli is indeed a highly intercultural city. M.O.S participation in ALF network is warmly welcomed by all members, who, at this occasion, would be enthusiastic to join in the intercultural dialogue actions and become advocates for the Network and also ALF’s values, which align with ours. We would like to cultivate firm connections and join in thought-provoking conversations and best-practices’ exchange; since, in our group, each and every one of us is viewed as expert in own field and this expertise we would like to share, actively participating to the Network’s activities. International Choir festival can be also a vehicle for social and artistic exchanges, panel discussions, potential collaborations, or joint submission of proposals for EU programs. Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
Synergies and alliances are integral for M.O.S. We are enthusiastic about joining in a robust Network committed to its purposes with impactful initiatives, so as to gain inspiration and insight to confront common challenges. We live in times of crucial sociopolitical issues, while isolation and self-absorption is a common phenomenon. We have a duty to resist by expressing unity, tolerance and solidarity, though our art and social presence. "We sing to unite the world" says a Greek folk song and we want this motto to be heard from our small island in the world.Additional Information
