paru paru is an artist residency and a reading room in Catania, Sicily.
paru paru is a space for reciprocal care, embodied research, and situated artistic acts. paru paru welcomes collaboration and counters competition; defends a pluriversal approach against binaries and leans on interdependency.
paru paru is located in an island which is juridically european but deeply mediterranean. paru paru situates itself in between fluxes of lava, water and humans.
paru paru belongs to a South, and has a foot into the door of the North. We operate within this peculiar situation, trying to pay attention to the different asymmetries that our positioning places us in.
paru paru welcomes everyone but focusses its energies in giving curatorial and financial support to: artists from the global south and its diasporas; artists located in Sicily; and artists belonging to minorised communities.
Mission and Objectives
Paru paru wants to promote the creation of art in situated and socially valuable forms.
The residency aims at welcoming artists with a focus on the Mediterranean, the Global South and its diasporas in order to support their work and promote in Sicily. Residents are always asked to think their work in relation with the hosting context and to share their work with local audiences.
Paru paru has a specialised library focussed on post-colonial, feminist and critical theory texts. By its reading room, the library is available to the community in Catania: by giving access to this educational tool, we wish to support research and empower young researchers in our territory.
Main Projects / Activities
Maremeo residency programme is a residency project co-held with Salmastra (a sister NGO working on social activism and its relation with the sea): until now, the programme hosted 13 artists in residence working on new ways to re-imagine the Mediterranean and our connection to it.
CRIT sessions are co-organised with Viaraffineria (an art space in Catania committed to participatory practices and ecological issues): these sessions are devised to ease the encounter between artists and the general public, facilitate discussion and access to contemporary creation.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
paru paru would like to bring expertise in the domain of artist residency exchanges and organisation.
We will engage in promoting the ALF network locally and to reinforce Euro-Mediterranean dialogue in our activities.
Why do you want to join the ALF Network?
In collaboration with two sister organisations in Tunisia (Association Delta in Sousse and eSseda.lab in Chott-Meriem), we are devising a long term project of exchange by the means of artist residencies: we do this because we believe in collaboration and dialogue inside the Mediterranean and we want to reinforce our exchanges. Our artistic activity is always aimed at being connected with the social fabric of our context. We want to be part of an open society connected by the Mediterranean Sea.
