Procédé Zèbre is an association based in Vichy, France, with over 30 years of experience in theatre projects at local, national, and international levels. The company focuses on two key areas: engaging citizens in professional theatre and exploring individual and collective memories from different regions. It organizes theatre workshops, led by a team (three full-time staff for management and up to 10 professional artists), for mixed amateur groups, including youth, people with disabilities, and psychiatric patients. These workshops gather local memories through interactions with community members, which are then transformed into theatrical performances. The company’s work reflects on the past, addresses present challenges in regard to future scenarios. With a strong network across Europe and internationally, Procédé Zèbre has extensive experience in Erasmus+ and Creative Europe programs. The company’s annual budget for 2023 is €365,301.
Mission and Objectives
Since 1990, Procédé Zèbre, under the direction of Fabrice Dubusset, has been exploring hybrid forms of artistic production that blend the arts with education, history, and other imaginative fields of culture. These interdisciplinary collaborations address diverse themes and engage a wide range of audiences.
The company’s programming and activities are based on two main missions : on one hand, involving amateur groups, such as youth, in professional artistic processes; on the other, exploring territorial memories revealed through artistic creation and public performances. Our first works were created in Vichy, inspired by the contradictory history of the city in the 20th century. Today, we continue to uncover the traces of the past of other georaphical places.
Our ambition is to make theatre a collective experience where each person, with their unique qualities and role, is working ion a collective mission. We want to combat short-term memory and confront global issues of todays societies, such as discrimination, inequality, and conflict. Working within an international network across different geographical regions encourages to unite to amplify the urgency of collective communication and action.
Our objectifs :
- Raise awareness and share to mixed groupes and generations theatre practices on social and democratic issues.
- Promote innovative intercultural exchanges between countries and disciplines, with a focus on the performing arts as a means of collective understanding and expression.
- Strengthen capacity and empowerment by facilitating connections with local and international organizations.
- Create a network of change ambassadors: Our ambition is for the participants in our projects to become ambassadors, even beyond the duration of the project, to continue raising awareness among their peers in their respective communities, ensuring that meaningful work continues.
Main Projects / Activities
Apart from theater production and diffusion on a local and national level, Procédé Zèbre has initiated several international projects such as "Laboratories Iuvenis II", an Erasmus+ program between eleven partners working with European youth. Between 2018 and 2024, we organised workshops with young people to learn languages and local as well as global history through the practice of theater and dance. We have involved hundreds of young people in our theatrical creation processes. Together, we explored the different memories of European territories, allowing them to (re)discover their own histories, share them with other partners, and, most importantly, embody them on stage. These artistic creations and exchanges have fostered lasting connections and solidarity among young European citizens.
From 2022 to 2024, Procédé Zèbre and two professional companies from Brescia (Lombardy, Italy) and Zenica (Bosnia-Herzegovina) have been conducting artistic research to further our respective experiences in the use of theater for educational purposes. The project "Water Mirror – Miroir d’eau" chooses the multidisciplinary nature of teaching and intends to make art a lever for global learning. The project aimed to erase the formal border between learning and artistic creation. It aspired to make theatrical creation and practice the core of a lifelong, multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary learning process. The three partner companies were developing a series of workshops that involve professional artists and young people. All were brought to share their voices and their knowledge to end up with common performances presented in six different countries during a Youth-Artists European Tour by bus in July 2024.
Since 2023, the company has been working on a new artistic project focused on learning French through theatre and cooking, in partnership with the theatre of Arvaikheer, Mongolia. This project is part of the cooperation between the Allier Department and the Övörkhangai Province in Mongolia. A joint creation named "Esprit Nomade" is currently being developed around pollution, climate change, and its global consequences in French and Mongolian language.
