General Information

Rana Choir is a unique Arab-Jewish women’s choir operating in Jaffa and comprised of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish women. The choir was founded in 2008 by Mika Danny, who serves as its musical director and conductor, and by Idan Toledano, who serves as the artistic director.
Rana has performed successfully throughout Israel and the world. The choir’s repertoire includes folk songs and women’s songs in Hebrew, Arabic, and other cultures of the region.

Mission and Objectives

Rana choir aims to express the female voice, which is not heard enough in our region, to cultivate dialogue and create a cultural and human bridge.

Main Projects / Activities

Rana’s activities are directed at generating intercultural dialogue and creativity, enabling bridge-building and actualizing transformative interactions through music between various groups in Israel-Palestine and abroad, all through a gendered lens. Our activities:
1. Provide a space for Jaffa’s Christian, Muslim, and Jewish women to meet, sing, and exchange cultural and interpersonal knowledge, through weekly meetings and rehearsals.

2. Raise awareness of the possibility of a shared, peaceful, intercultural society in the Israeli-Palestinian context throughout our performances: Rana performs a number of concerts throughout the year and participates in events on an ongoing basis, many of which are performed pro bono for grassroots organizations which align with our values such as: women’s causes and peacebuilding initiatives, as well as for underserved communities who cannot afford to pay for the concerts. Every year, audiences are profoundly moved as the Rana Choir appears at the joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony.

3. Create a women-led platform for intercultural dialogue and exchange through music for different audiences throughout Israel-Palestine and abroad: Our Song and Discourse Encounters - participatory encounters blend live choir performances with intimate storytelling from members' lived experiences, followed by open dialogue where audiences engage directly with the women about how the choir has transformed their lives, identities, and communities. These sessions challenge audiences to reconsider what is possible in Arab-Jewish relations and women's role in building an equal society.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We would like to collaborate and cooperate with other organizations/ groups of a shared society, attend performances and discourse encounters with other mixed audiences in Israel or abroad. In addition, we would be happy to contribute to promoting the discourse within and outside Israel on issues of multiculturalism, equality and dialogue.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Rana is now facing an unexpected funding crisis that puts us at risk of closing our doors as one of the few places where Arab and Jewish women still gather to sing, share, and build trust. We are fighting to keep Rana alive.
Since 2017, our organization has relied on funding from the Israeli Ministry of Culture as a cornerstone of our operating budget. After many years of partnership, that support ended this year and we are at a critical turning point.
While we have worked to diversify our funding through individual giving, new partnerships, and earned revenue - the structural instability of arts funding, particularly for Arab-Jewish cooperation work, remains an ongoing challenge.
At this point in time, we wish to connect with organizations or network of organizations that will help us reach as much information as possible regarding opportunities for collaboration and fundraising - in order to promise the choir's survival in the next two years.

Thank you very much!
