General Information

Reading to the Others is a non-profit organisation - founded in 2015 - that is aimed at people who are unable to read due to illness or disability.
We support equal access to education and social inclusion for vulnerable groups - blind, elderly and sick - by creating audio books and reading for those who cannot do it on their own.
At the same time, we strengthen social culture by training employees, students and teachers in inclusive practices that respect diversity.

Mission and Objectives

We work with blind people, visually impaired people, elderly and sick people, people with dyslexia, who cannot read or cannot hold a book in their hands due to physical disability or illness.
We educate employees, students and teachers to co-create an inclusive society that equitably accommodates us all.
Our vision: an inclusive society where all people have equal opportunities for social inclusion.
Our mission: to ensure equal educational opportunities, through access to books, for people who lack access to books.

Main Projects / Activities

We record - We read - We raise awareness
For ten years now, Reading to the Others has been systematically implementing three main programmes:
1. We record books - literary, academic and children's books - which are requested by blind and print-disabled users. We have so far recorded more than 180 audio books which are then made available free of charge to our community of beneficiaries.
2. We keep company by reading to elderly people and patients in Elderly Care Units and in homes in Attica, Chimolos and Crete. in 2024 we kept more than 450 elderly people company.
3. We raise awareness. At the same time, we promote good practices by educating key social groups - employees, students and teachers - and raising awareness among the wider public with the aim of changing the social culture in the long term, creating an inclusive society in which all people participate without discrimination.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Reading to the Others brings to the ALF Network a decade of experience in creating inclusive cultural and educational spaces for people who are excluded due to disability, age, or illness. Our contribution to the Network in Greece is threefold:

We produce accessible knowledge by recording literary, academic, and children’s books in audio format, tailored to the needs of blind and print-disabled individuals. These resources not only support inclusion but can also be shared across Network members working on education and accessibility.
We foster intergenerational solidarity and emotional well-being by offering live reading sessions to elderly individuals in care homes and remote areas. This model of companionship through reading can inspire similar grassroots actions in other countries.
We shape inclusive mindsets by designing and delivering awareness-raising activities and training programmes for key social groups—employees, students, and teachers—promoting practices that respect diversity and remove barriers.
Through these programmes, we are building bridges between generations, abilities, and communities. We look forward to sharing our methods and tools with other members of the Network, collaborating on cross-cultural initiatives, and jointly working toward a Euro-Mediterranean region defined by empathy, equity, and inclusion.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Reading to the Others is dedicated to building an inclusive society where all individuals—regardless of disability, age, or illness—have equal access to education and culture. By producing audiobooks and offering inclusive training to communities and institutions, we break down barriers for people who cannot read or access printed materials.

Joining the ALF Network aligns deeply with our mission and vision. The Network’s emphasis on cross-cultural exchange, grassroots initiatives, and collaborative learning offers us a powerful platform to expand our impact, share our inclusive practices, and learn from like-minded peers across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Through our active involvement, we aim to contribute to a shared vision of inclusion, while gaining access to opportunities, partnerships, and tools that will enhance our capacity to advocate for the rights and dignity of vulnerable populations. Together, we can co-create a future where diversity is respected, and all voices—especially those often unheard—are given space to be seen, heard, and valued.
