Semsemia was established to address the profound cultural centralization in Egypt,
emerging from the small town of Ismailia on the banks of the Suez Canal. Our mission
is to democratize and facilitate access to knowledge about provincial towns beyond
Cairo and Alexandria. We achieve this through four core activities: organizing trips and
walking tours, destination development, cultural content production about provincial
towns , and creating a mobile app that digitizes and enhances the experience of these
areas for both national and international audiences. Over the past three years,
Semsemia has conducted numerous trips and projects across these pillars,
collaborating with internal partners and local communities to galvanize efforts and
ensure a sustainable path toward our vision. We aim to cultivate a vibrant cultural scene
in various communities, presenting a diverse and complex view of Egypt's history and
tourism landscape, reflecting its true composition rather than reducing it to being
synonymous with Cairo
Mission and Objectives
Semsemia’s mission is to cultivate slow tourism that fosters deep connections between
visitors and Egypt’s under-explored towns and villages. It aspires to create an
ecosystem where tourism is sustainable, educational, and impactful for both travelers
and host communities. Semsemia envisions an Egypt where every region, especially
those beyond the main cities, becomes a celebrated part of the nation’s tourism fabric,
thereby decentralizing the country's cultural narrative and supporting rural economies.
Main Projects / Activities
Immersive Educational Tours and Study Trips - Semsemia conducts research-based
cultural and educational tours, emphasizing historical and contemporary social issues
specific to regions outside the capital. These tours offer participants a deep dive into the
cultural fabric of each area, fostering understanding and appreciation of local contexts.
Destination Development and Branding: - In collaboration with local communities,
Semsemia facilitates participatory initiatives aimed at developing and branding villages
and rural areas in Egypt. This involves the creation of innovative educational and
tourism activities, support for local cultural entities in establishing museums and
archives, and providing business training and funding opportunities for local SMEs. The
overarching goal is to empower communities and leverage cultural resources for
socio-economic inclusion and transformation.
