SWEDO is an independent, non governmental organization engaged in intercultural dialogue, social cohesion and community based cooperation across the Euro-Mediterranean region. In Turkey, SWEDO works through partnerships with local civil society initiatives, focusing on people to people exchange, cultural understanding and inclusive community engagement.
SWEDO cooperates with House of Democracy, a civil society platform bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to foster dialogue, mutual understanding and social participation through non political, community oriented activities. The cooperation is grounded in shared values of inclusiveness, respect for diversity and peaceful dialogue, and is implemented through locally anchored, culturally sensitive initiatives.
Following the earthquakes in Turkey in 2023, SWEDO and House of Democracy engaged in solidaritybased, community focused initiatives that supported dialogue, psychosocial wellbeing and social connection among affected communities. These activities emphasized cultural exchange, mutual support and community resilience, contributing to trust building and social cohesion in a sensitive post-crisis context through locally coordinated efforts.
Mission and Objectives
SWEDO works to support community wellbeing and inclusive development through locally anchored, community based initiatives implemented in cooperation with local partners. The organisation focuses on strengthening social resilience, participation and access to opportunities, with an emphasis on culturally sensitive approaches and constructive engagement at the community level.
Through partnerships with civil society actors and community based organisations, SWEDO contributes to social stability, mutual understanding and sustainable community development in diverse and evolving contexts.
Our objectives are to:
Support the wellbeing of children, youth and women through community based activities that promote psychosocial wellbeing, participation and safe community environments.
Encourage social interaction and dialogue among diverse community groups through youth activities, cultural exchange and inclusive community engagement.
Contribute to economic resilience by supporting skills development, vocational orientation, employability and small scale livelihood related initiatives.
Encourage inclusive participation in social and economic activities, with a focus on increasing women’s engagement at community level.
Strengthen the operational capacity of local partners and community based organisations to deliver sustainable and locally relevant services.
Promote environmentally responsible and climate aware community initiatives, particularly in underserved areas
Main Projects / Activities
SWEDO implements community based projects that promote social wellbeing, inclusion and sustainable development through locally anchored partnerships. The organisation’s activities focus on strengthening community resilience, participation and access to opportunities in diverse social and cultural contexts.
SWEDO’s main project activities include community engagement initiatives for children, youth and women; youth led and cultural activities that encourage dialogue and mutual understanding and skills development initiatives supporting employability and livelihoods. SWEDO also works to strengthen the capacity of local civil society partners and community-based organisations through training, mentoring and organisational support.
Across its programmes, SWEDO integrates cross cutting perspectives such as social inclusion, gender sensitive participation and environmentally responsible practices. All activities are designed and implemented in close cooperation with local partners, ensuring cultural sensitivity, local ownership and long term sustainability.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
SWEDO can contribute to the Anna Lindh Foundation Network in Turkey by sharing practical experience in people to people activities, community engagement and intercultural exchange implemented through local partnerships. SWEDO brings a collaborative and inclusive approach that supports dialogue, cultural interaction and youth participation at community level.
Through its international and regional experience, SWEDO can contribute to the Network by facilitating joint activities, knowledge exchange and peer learning among member organisations. SWEDO can also support cross border cooperation and exchanges that connect local initiatives in Turkey with partners in other Euro Mediterranean countries.
By working in close cooperation with local actors and respecting local contexts, SWEDO aims to be an active and constructive Network member, contributing to shared learning, visibility of people to people initiatives and the development of inclusive, culturally sensitive activities within the Network.
