Tzedek Centers is a national grassroots movement founded in 2016 to strengthen democratic participation, equality, and justice in Israeli society. The organization operates through 24 local centers across Israel, supported by a national headquarters and specialized departments that lead distinct fields of expertise and action, including shared society, gender equality, public education, climate and sustainability, advocacy by people living in poverty, and leadership development for Russian-speaking immigrants.
Our work includes leadership trainings, local action groups, community events, public campaigns, rights-access support, and policy advocacy at the municipal and national levels. Main partners include local municipalities, civil society organizations, philanthropic foundations, and field partners such as Ajyal, Rabbis for Human Rights, Abraham Initiatives, aChord, and others.
Mission and Objectives
Our mission is to build democratic civic power from the ground up, by equipping residents to organize around the issues that affect their daily lives and to influence decision-making in their cities.
Our core objectives are to cultivate local leadership, strengthen organized communities, promote equality and shared responsibility, and create practical pathways for residents to move from concern to collective action. In each city, we run several training programs each year, where participants explore pressing social and civic issues, learn how local governance and municipal decision-making work, and gain tools for community organizing, advocacy, and policy change.
Graduates form local action groups that study specific issues, develop practical solutions, organize stakeholders, work with elected officials, and build coalitions with civil society partners. Through this process, residents advance concrete changes in their cities while also growing into broader leadership roles, from school boards and neighborhood committees to municipal government.
Main Projects / Activities
Tzedek Centers’ main activities are organized through an ecosystem model that connects local civic infrastructure with national fields of expertise. Our 24 local centers serve as the primary base for community organizing, leadership development, local action groups, community events, and municipal engagement. Alongside them, specialized national departments develop content, training modules, professional tools, and field expertise that are integrated into local center activity according to each community’s needs.
These national fields include:
Shared society: Jewish-Arab civic leadership, shared local initiatives, and work to strengthen cooperation in mixed cities and diverse communities.
Gender equality: Public campaigns and civic organizing to advance equal representation of women and men in decision-making bodies.
Public education: Parent-led organizing to protect and strengthen public education and democratic values in schools.
Climate and sustainability: Community-based work around climate resilience, public space, urban nature, and environmental policy.
Poverty and rights advocacy: Organizing people living in poverty to influence policy, expand rights access, and bring lived experience into decision-making.
Russian-speaking immigrants: Civic integration, leadership development, community building, and rights-access work for Russian-speaking olim and immigrants.
How can you contribute to the Network in your country?
Tzedek Centers can contribute to the ALF Network in Israel through our grassroots infrastructure, local convening capacity, and experience working with diverse communities across the country. Through our 24 local centers and national fields of expertise, we can help connect network members to local activists, civic leaders, municipalities, and community initiatives, while sharing practical knowledge from our work in shared society, democratic participation, gender equality, public education, climate resilience, and social rights.
