General Information

Vamos Orchestra began its journey in 2014 in Vamos, a village located between Chania and Rethymno in Crete. The original core of the orchestra was a group of musicians who experimented with the sounds of a symphonic orchestra, blending them with various musical genres. The result was outstanding, and the audience's reaction was enthusiastic. Gradually, the group expanded. What started as a small ensemble evolved into a full orchestra. New members, musicians from different parts of Crete, joined, and soon the Vamos Orchestra’s performances extended beyond the island's borders. Over the years, distinguished artists and ensembles have collaborated with the Vamos Orchestra, including Ioanna Forti, Tasos Apostolou, Myrsini Margariti, Eleni Dimopoulou, Thodoris Voutsikakis, Zacharias Karounis, Anna Koti, Vasilis Dimakopoulos, Anna Papagiannaki Divani, the Aeolos Woodwind Quintet, and the vocal ensemble Chores. Notably, composer Dimitris Maramis entrusted his lyrical work *Erotokritos* to be reorchestrated and performed in collaboration with the orchestra across various venues in Greece. Vamos Orchestra is an association. Vamos Orchestra features an impressive lineup of musicians across various sections. In the Violin I section, the members include Elena Ormyliotou, Christina Paschali, Lauri Hämäläinen, Leonardo Sopi, and Carol Habich. The Violin II section consists of Olga Papadimitriou, Nikolas Marakakis, Aristea Charalampidou, Myrsini Makrea, and Yvonne Skoula. The Cellos are performed by Bernhard Klein and Katerina Sarantinou, while Dimitris Nikoglou plays the Double Bass. On Flute, we have Eirini Vouzi, and on Clarinet, Kostas Kanellos. The Trumpet is played by Vangelis Kanellos, and Theo Kraaijvanger performs on Euphonium. Nikos Fragkiadakis plays the Piano, Prodromos Karadeloglou the Classical Guitar, and Ilias Kontoudis the Percussion. The orchestration and musical direction are led by Thanasis Papathanasiou.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of the Vamos Orchestra is to bring people together through the transformative power of music, combining the classical symphonic tradition with diverse musical genres. By fostering artistic expression and cultural exchange, the orchestra aims to inspire audiences, support musical innovation, and create enriching musical experiences both in Crete and beyond. Objectives: Excellence in Music Performance: To continually aim for unparalleled artistic quality, seamlessly integrating classical music with other styles and genres, while encouraging innovation and creative experimentation in music. Cultural Outreach and Accessibility: To broaden its audience by performing in a variety of venues throughout Crete, Greece, and internationally. The orchestra’s mission is to make symphonic music more accessible, even to those in distant or underrepresented areas. Collaboration with Local and International Artists: To work alongside esteemed national and international musicians, composers, and ensembles. This collaboration enhances the orchestra’s repertoire and encourages meaningful cultural and musical exchange. Promotion of Greek Musical Heritage: To showcase the works of Greek and Cretan composers, both historical and contemporary, ensuring their legacy is preserved and celebrated within the orchestra’s performances, thereby highlighting Crete’s rich and diverse musical tradition. Innovative and Thematic Concerts: To present distinct and creative concert experiences by exploring contemporary works and reinterpreting classical pieces, appealing to modern-day audiences with a fresh perspective.
