Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue

Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue

A yearlong celebration of Euro-Mediterranean identities and cooperation

This initiative is born from the collective efforts of over 200 young representatives from the civil society of over 20 countries, who gathered at the Forum des Mondes Méditerranéens on February 2022 in Marseille.Their recommendations, alongside the call of Ministers of Culture of the Euro-Mediterranean region on 17 June of the same year in Naples, inspired the 43 Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean to endorse the “Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue” initiative to further promote the diversity and shared identity of the Mediterranean and contribute to a better mutual understanding of its peoples.

Building on this youth-driven momentum of shared ambition, the Anna Lindh Foundation and the Union for the Mediterranean worked together in close collaboration with young civil society representatives and governments to design and launch the initiative. This collaborative and open approach ensures that the initiative remains rooted in the ambitions and voices of the youth at its core.

The Mediterranean Capitals of Culture & Dialogue is an initiative jointly coordinated by the Union for the Mediterranean and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

Euro-Med to Med-Capital: Alexandria Edition

MCCD Cultural Timeline 2025

As part of the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue initiative, Tirana and Alexandria were selected as the first cities to embody this shared Euro-Mediterranean vision. Following the successful ALForum held in Tirana in June 2025, which brought together young changemakers, cultural practitioners and policymakers. Alexandria now takes the lead by hosting a vibrant series of cultural events that highlight its historic role as a hub of creativity, exchange, and dialogue across the region.

Under the title Euro-Med to Med-Capital: Alexandria Edition 2025, the Alexandria programme will take place from mid-November to December, featuring performances, workshops, and artistic collaborations led by partners from across the Euro-Mediterranean region, all celebrating the city’s living Mediterranean identity.

November 2025

December 2025

The MCCD programme will continue in Tetouan (Morocco) and Matera (Italy) in 2026, with future host cities to be announced.
