The Dutch Network of the Anna Lindh Foundation highlights the work of its member organisation Het Grote Midden Oosten Platform (The Greater Middle East Platform), which promotes understanding of social and cultural realities in the Middle East through personal narratives and reflection.

The organisation recently presented a story that follows Baher, a Syrian woman who fled Latakia with her young child due to threats to her safety from extremist groups. Baher is highly educated and formerly directed a centre for Alawite art and culture. The story illustrates her personal experiences of displacement, loss of family, and the challenge of preserving identity under insecurity, while highlighting the Alawite community’s rich cultural heritage, centuries of education, intellectual pursuits, and the key role of women in teaching and preserving knowledge.

Through this narrative, Het Grote Midden Oosten Platform offers readers a window into the human dimension of life in Syria, focusing on resilience, creativity, and cultural continuity amid instability. The initiative aims to foster empathy, intercultural understanding, and reflection, aligning with the Anna Lindh Foundation’s mission to promote dialogue and mutual understanding across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
