FLAGSHIP PROGRAMMES
Thematic area: Research
Language: English
The international MA in Mediterranean History is a consecutive degree program that builds on a three-year BA in History at the University of Konstanz or on a subject-related bachelor’s degree. As a research-oriented, English-language program, it provides a cross-period understanding of Mediterranean societies.
The Mediterranean as a “liquid continent” has for thousands of years been a contact zone between Africa, Asia, and Europe—a laboratory of globalization in which trade networks, empires, religious orders, languages, and cultures have constantly shifted. Current issues such as war, migration, and climate change can only be understood within this long historical perspective. At the same time, the region is a central arena for innovative historiographical approaches—from environmental history and postcolonialism to global history and ocean studies.
This unique MA program examines trans-Mediterranean dynamics and interconnections over a period of 3,000 years, from antiquity to the 21st century. It provides cross-period knowledge, regional expertise, and practical skills that are relevant both for academic careers and for positions in institutions, organizations, and companies connected to the Mediterranean region.
Application period:
