Blue Door Malta

Blue Door Education (BDE), the new member of  ALF Malta Network, is a non-profit organization based in Malta that offers free educational programs to refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants. The mission of BDE is to promote inclusion and empowerment through accessible learning opportunities.

BDE functions through a volunteer-driven model, bringing together educators, researchers, and community members who lead classes and workshops. While they maintain a small core team, we work closely with volunteers and partner organizations to broaden our reach and effectiveness.

BDE initiatives are centered around literacy, language learning, and skills training, aiming to equip participants with the tools needed for everyday life and successful integration. They also partner with researchers and civil society actors to foster intercultural dialogue and share knowledge.

BDE is dedicated to ensuring that education serves as a bridge to inclusion and empowerment. BDE believes that literacy is foundational to personal growth, community participation, and social cohesion. Their goal is to provide free, high-quality education that enables individuals to gain confidence, understand their surroundings, and actively contribute to their communities.

  • Key Goals:

Deliver Literacy and Language Programs: Provide structured English and literacy classes to help learners improve their communication and comprehension.

Encourage Social Inclusion: Use education as a platform to promote intercultural understanding and connect different communities.

Support Ongoing Learning: Offer skill-building initiatives to increase independence and employability.

Work in Partnership: Collaborate with NGOs, academics, and educators to enhance access to education and advocate for migrant rights.

Ensure Inclusive Learning Spaces: Create safe, welcoming environments that support all learners.

  • Core Activities:

Basic English and Literacy Courses

BDE offers free, volunteer-led English and literacy classes tailored for migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in Malta. These sessions focus on practical language use for everyday tasks, employment, and community engagement.

Women-Only Literacy & Empowerment Programs

To address the specific needs of migrant women, we run female-only literacy classes in a supportive setting. These classes also encourage confidence, peer connection, and integration.

Digital Skills and Literacy Training

BDE host workshops to improve digital literacy—teaching skills such as email use, online navigation, and basic tech knowledge—to help participants bridge the digital divide and boost employability.

Volunteer and Educator Development

BDE invests in its volunteers by providing training, teaching materials, and mentorship, helping educators deliver impactful and effective lessons.

Community Engagement and Cultural Exchange

Through activities like conversation groups, cultural storytelling, and joint community events, BDE nurtures intercultural understanding and builds bridges between migrants and the local population.

Educational Research and Policy Advocacy

BDE works with researchers and institutions to explore the challenges migrants face in accessing education. They support research efforts, offer access to our educational spaces, and contribute to dialogue around inclusive education policies.
