FLAGSHIP PROGRAMMES
As 2024 draws to a close, Free Press Unlimited reflects on a year of both remarkable progress and significant challenges in its mission to defend press freedom worldwide. With a network of over 300 partners spanning continents, the organization has been at the forefront of initiatives to protect journalists, bolster independent media, and promote access to reliable information in the face of rising authoritarianism and disinformation.
Protecting Journalists in Crisis Zones
In Gaza, Free Press Unlimited responded swiftly to the unprecedented crisis caused by Israel’s war, providing emergency aid to 269 journalists. To honor those lost, the organization created a commemorative monument and held a memorial protest in Hilversum, where the names of killed journalists were read aloud. Advocacy efforts included a solidarity video with the Dutch Association of Journalists and open letters urging Israeli authorities and international coalitions to safeguard press freedom.
Advancing Safety and Mental Health in Asia
In Bangladesh, the organization empowered journalists through digital security training and introduced insurance options to address physical risks. Additionally, Free Press Unlimited launched psycho-social support initiatives to combat mental health stigma, integrating these services into women journalist networks.
Resilience Amid Repression in Latin America
Free Press Unlimited supported journalists facing repression in Nicaragua and led a joint electoral mission during Venezuela’s elections to expose disinformation and censorship. In Mexico, a research project with UNAM University provided critical media insights, while in Guatemala, regional journalists engaged in dialogue with the Dutch Ambassador on press freedom challenges.
Strengthening Media in African Conflict Zones
Amid escalating conflict in Eastern Congo, 24 local radio stations received support to provide critical information while ensuring journalist safety. In Somalia, Free Press Unlimited celebrated the approval of the Access to Information Act, emphasizing its potential for investigative journalism and public accountability.
Capacity Building in the MENA Region
In Jordan, Free Press Unlimited funded media outlets and offered training in investigative reporting and organizational development. In Iraq, the organization advanced psycho-social support for women journalists and bolstered digital security for media outlets. Meanwhile, ongoing support in Syria continues to focus on rebuilding press freedom in the region.
Combating Disinformation in Europe and the Balkans
Free Press Unlimited convened experts in Amsterdam to address disinformation in the Western Balkans, while a membership training in Serbia enhanced journalist association strategies. The “Remember Local Media?” conference spotlighted challenges facing local journalists in Serbia, fostering discussion on their critical role.
Emergency Support Through Reporters Respond
In 2024, Free Press Unlimited’s emergency fund, Reporters Respond, supported over 1,500 journalists worldwide. Aid ranged from relocation to replacing equipment, ensuring media workers could continue their essential work. Women made up 41% of those supported, men 57%, and non-binary individuals 2%.
Global Advocacy and Ethical Leadership
The organization continued its fight against SLAPPs, advocating for stronger protections in the EU and supporting independent media initiatives in West Africa. Free Press Unlimited also made a principled decision to leave X (formerly Twitter) in opposition to its amplification of hate speech, moving instead to Bluesky to promote safer digital spaces.
A Vision for 2025
Reflecting on the year, Executive Director Ruth Kronenburg stated:
“Where authoritarian leaders come to power, press freedom is challenged almost immediately. Amid these challenges, Free Press Unlimited remains steadfast in its mission to protect journalists and promote access to reliable information worldwide.”
As the organization looks ahead, it reaffirms its commitment to solidarity, innovation, and collaboration, working toward a future where press freedom is a cornerstone of justice and democracy.
