Createschools - winners of the Rubbish Film prize May 2024
The Irish ALF network reflects a wide breath of talent and skills - one being Createschool. They promote creativity and innovation for young people in Irish schools through the use of media. The Rubbish Film Festival is an example: it is an exciting digital arts education initiative that encourages creativity and environmental awareness among students. Secondary schools in participating counties can apply for a team of their Transition Year students to take part in this innovative festival. These students will receive training and support in key Next Generation Skills and then create short films that highlight the global issue of waste and pollution and their impact on the planet. The entries for 2024 highlighted two of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: Explore responsible consumption and production practices. Advocate for more sustainable lifestyles and the reduction of waste in your films. SDG 13: Climate Action: Address the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on our planet. Explore solutions, raise awareness, and inspire action to combat climate-related challenges. All of the films submitted by students in secondary school were evaluated on the following five criteria: Creativity: Showcase your unique perspective and storytelling skills to engage and captivate your audience. Adherence to Brief: Address at least one of the festival's themes in a meaningful and impactful way. Impact: Demonstrate how your film can drive positive change and inspire action on sustainability. Production Quality: Showcase your technical filmmaking skills and create a visually appealing and well-produced film. Application of Acquired Knowledge: Showcase your understanding of sustainability concepts and how they are portrayed in your film. There were a number of categories and winners from Ireland including Loreto College Swords (best poster), Cross and Passion College County Kildare (Judges' Award), Presentation College Carlow (runner up film) and St Angela's College Cork (best film).
