From the series of the Online Enhancing Capacities Sessions: the Portaiture Workshop

On April 3rd, 2025, the ALF Albanian HoN, in collaboration with the ALF Co-Head in Luxembourg, organized the Portaiture Workshop, in the framework of NES III.

The trainer for this workshop was Benjamin George Coles, a freelancer in journalism, legal proofreading, who also facilitates active citizenship workshops for Our Common Future, the Co Head of the ALF Network in Luxembourg.

Through this workshop, the participants explored how they can use language to create vivid, memorable portraits of people by looking at a selection of characters drawn from a short film, a song and two written pieces, one from a novel and the other in the form of a short essay.

During this session, we had the chance to talk about the techniques we can use to bring a character to life in a way that leaves an impression on readers/audiences, as well as using these techniques to build a personalized narrative. While analyzing the portrait pieces, participants occasionally shared stories and experiences from their own lives and work. This opened up space to talk not only about the technique of written portraiture but also about more personal and subjective topics. The workshop was concluded with an excercise, the results of which were then shared and discussed as a group.

We want to thank our coulleages from Our Common Future and the participants for making this session entertaining and a nice learning experience!
