The findings reveal promising opportunities:
73.9% of respondents feel very or mostly welcome and included in museums and galleries.
50.9% are very or fairly interested in the opportunity to become Cultural Ambassadors.
However, an interest in culture alone is not always enough.
Participation also depends on whether cultural spaces are accessible and comfortable, whether information is presented clearly, whether exhibitions offer meaningful and engaging stories, and whether cultural experiences are financially accessible. Another important factor is having someone to visit cultural spaces with.
True inclusion begins when cultural spaces are not simply open to older people, but are designed with their needs, perspectives and life experiences in mind.
Older people should not be seen only as audiences or cultural consumers. They can also become active participants, contributors and Cultural Ambassadors, bringing their knowledge, experience and perspectives into cultural life.
This is the vision that the MUGArtS project – Cultural Ambassadors: Redefining Adult Education in Cultural Spaces seeks to promote.
